Nope, never. Don't get me wrong - if it was a 200 mile journey to the airport I'd allow more time, but generally I'd stay overnight locally if flying from an airport far away. Also if the flight was eg at 6pm I'd allow more time due to rush hour.PompeyPete wrote: »Have you never missed a flight by being delayed on the road or a train? How do judge whether there'll be a delay or not, I haven't seen a website that can forecast a pile-up on the motorway, or some poor unfortunate who decides to jump in front of a train? If it hasn't happened or you've had a close call, then next time could be the one.;)
But both Manchester and Liverpool are similar distances from here to the distances I used to commute - when I commuted I was never more than 30 mins late due to traffic delays either way, and being more than 15 mins late was very rare, that's over a thousand journeys. So that's the sort of contingency I allow.
If there were a pile-up, that could result in a 5 hour delay if you're stuck between motorway junctions, like someone posted about here IIRC, so even allowing 3 hours wouldn't do you any good.
It's all down to state of mind and attitude to risk. One day I might miss a flight and it might cost me a few hundred to get the next one. But if that's the price to pay for a several thousand unneccessary hours hanging around at airports over a lifetime then IMO that's a price worth paying.
I had a friend who worked in a job where it was absolutely essential he arrived at time - if he was late he'd be sacked. No excuses. He used to arrive 20-30 mins early to be sure. If he could allow that sort of contingency for his job, his livelyhood, I can allow it for a mere flight!0 -
Now put youself in the boots of a bloke, with wife and a couple of youngsters. They've been saving hard for their 2 weeks in the sun.
I've got a single brother who gives advice as though everyone should do things the way he does.;)
All I'm saying is that there's no need to a print Boarding Pass yourself, unless there's a financial cost for not doing so.0 -

Hanging around airports with a couple of grumpy kids who've had to get up far too early isn't much fun...
Fair point if you have to check-in or drop bags anyway. But otherwise I think I'd prefer to be able to sail straight through to security once at the airport. They've been saving hard for their 2 weeks in the sun.
