Jaguar depreciation question

The plus side of buying a Jag over a BMW is that you won't be labelled as one of "those" drivers. You'll be able to experience driving with road ahead of you rather than being permanently parked in somebody's boot or 5 inches off their bumper.0

I've in the 'lucky' situation to have owned Alfa, Lexus and Jag
Alfa was v.reliable over nearly 3 years apart from an almost terminal engine issue - rebuilt under warranty in 3 weeks with good customer service - not a single other issue
Lexus I kept for under 6 months - didn't miss a beat (thank god as nearest dealer was 30 miles away) but bored the pants off me
Jag has had most issues (but to be fair is older/higher mileage) but all have been dealt with professionally and quickly by dealer and hasn't soured the ownership experience at all0 -
I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that your heart will sink each time the jag is faulty (of which there are many) and eventually you'll just want rid.
Then you'll have that thing in your mind that the Jag could do xyz and other cars cant...Then you'll remember the wallet hit and realise its for the better.0 -

They are amongst the most reliable brands these days, parts are relatively simple to get and (considering the cost of their cars) not expensive.0 -
They still have that image of early 1990's and older stuff where it should be a nice and well built car but it wasnt.
Move forward to the X-Type its virtually a Mondeo and with the exception of a few systems it shold be fairly reliable. Only a few bits that are jaguar only.
S-Type though will have more inbuilt, I wonder "when not if" that will fail and how much £££ to replace. They can have a few rather expensive electrical gremlins. ECU can be an issue if its rough running.
Cars built after 2006 could have a big jump in the tax payable so you can get a slightly newer one for less money, but with a higher tax bill.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

There's no indication that the OP is doing anything other than buying outright so I doubt if there is any implication for his tax bill. Of course, you might mean VED, but you know enough to say so in that case, don't you?0 -

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that's rubbish. You know for a fact that every single Jag built is unreliable and WILL break down?0 -
Having had 2 X-Types, and an XF, and about to buy another XF (and husband has had the same I think - it gets complicated as I took over ownership of one of his X-Types, I loved it so much I didn't want to get rid), I can safely say
- you don't buy a Jag to save money. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.
- they are a joy to drive
- they have a presence on the road like no other car I've driven
- they say to clients 'I am successful at what I do', but they don't scream 'You're paying me too much'.
I always remember an aunt of mine, very keen to impress us with how well off they were. She told me her husband had just bought a new Audi, and asked what my husband drove (not what I drove, but hey). I said 'a Jaguar' - she turned her back on me and ignored me for the rest of the evening. I didn't have the opportunity to tell her I drove one too...
We always buy them second hand - yes, they depreciate enormously. But even better, you know that whoever owned it before you will have looked after it. Because, well, you would, wouldn't you.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

Hasn't happened to me yet and I've had my 1998 XJ8 nearly 15 years now. Electrical problems? Haven't even had a bulb failure. The battery is nearly 14 years old and has never needed charging from an external source.
My son bought a new XF 3.0d over 5 years ago and remains very happy with it.0 -
I'm on my second xf. Bought the first new in Sep 2011 (3.0d 240)and swapped it for another 3.0d S in January this year.
Very reliable apart from the first one having battery failure 3 days after delivery. jaguar assistance (brilliant customer care) sorted it.
Depreciation was £23k on the first after 4 1/4 years. The only reason I changed was because I didn't like the new aluminium model and the dealer was discounting the unsold old models and I knew I would have to change at some point in the future.
Costs
Rear brakes wear out before the fronts. Changed at 19k , the fronts were 50% worn at 49k miles. Tyres lasted 17-24k depending on driving pattern. Servicing is comparable to other cars in the family such as a Lexus and Hyundai i20.
I don't expect to change it ever. :-)0
