Jaguar depreciation question

Hi guys,

I'm about to take the leap and purchase another car, it'll predominately be used for a longish commute daily so I'm looking at something 3 series sized.

My last 2 cars that size have both been 3 series, but I'm now looking at Audi A5's and Jag XF's. Budget is about £14/5k.

My question is why can I get much more Jag for my money than BMW or Audi? I've always thought Jag was of a similar if not higher level than the German ones, plus I see far less of them so it's not a supply/demand issue.

Why do Jags depreciate so hard? Do they have big maintenance bills after 4/5 years?

I can't necessarily advise on the depreciation as I've still got mine but I bought a top of the range XF3.0 Portfolio S within your price bracket from a franchised dealer - took their credit at 3.9% with 2 years servicing/warranty/tyre & wheel cover then sorted my own GAP

Best thing I did - never owned a BMW (bit like the forum troll) but I've had my share of Audi/Merc. I love it - I've had it 18mths and no plans of changing (which is unheard of) and the local dealer is great with any issues sorted under warranty

ETA - given the costs I've seen I wouldn't be having one without a Jaguar warranty

It's because Audi's (and to a lesser degree BMW's) are a fashion choice at the moment with certain groups keeping the prices up. Jaguar's have no bigger maintenance bills than the other 2 at that age but are not as sought after so lower price.
  • Thanks, it's the 3.0L I'm looking at, good to hear you like it!
How thirsty is it, I've had a 330i and a 330d and they were both quite bad...

Is there anything I need to look out for on them, what are common faults?

try http://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/ It's an excellent forum for Jaguar owners full of guys that are helpful and have seen pretty much every problem that can come up.

They are always happy to help with advice from buying to repairing. (helped me out a few times).

Given it's a bigger car than a 330d then you're better off looking at the 275bhp engine - certainly gives enough oomph

I don't hang around and MPG varies between 25mpg round town up to close to 50mpg on a clear motorway run (through cruising at 80 knocks 7-8mpg off that)

Mines close to 100k now and I bought with 80k - issues so far have been

    a cracked 20" alloy
Split intercooler pipe (very common and not a cheap fix)
New brake pads/discs all round (£540 from Jaguar)
Non-working heated drivers seat (1st world problems)
Replacement rear screen (heater interfering with DAB)
    Replacement passenger window regulator

If you do buy from main dealer then make sure they throw in sat-nat update discs - big changes between 2010 and 2015 versions
  • Some gem bits of advice given, thanks both.

Buy a Lexus for same price. At least it won't break down like Jags.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Genuine question, are there still the reliability problems attached to Jags? Or is this just an old thing, like on Alfas?

No, they're on a par with most other things these days.

If you like the XF, I'd say go for it. Its really just down to there is more demand for Audis, Mercs and BMWs therefore prices remain higher.

No more than any other manufacturer.

In 2014 they came equal first with Lexus on the What Car?/JD Power survey, after coming first the previous two years.

May have slipped a bit since then but still better than BMW or Audi, with the XF coming second to the Merc E-Class and ahead of the 5 Series.
