Hi,
My son bought a chat headset for the xbox with his birthday money. He paid cash. 3 weeks later and after very little use they stopped working.
Being a typical teen he has lost the receipt.

I took them back to Argos and explained and asked for a straight swap due to them being faulty.
They said without a receipt I have no proof of purchase, the product was not exclusive to argos.
I was returning the headset in pristine packaging which had an argos label on it plus the argos product code. Gov.uk says proof of purchase might be receipt, credit card statement or packaging.
I showed them the argos sticker and product code sticker but they refused point blank to swap it without a receipt stating it was argos policy no receipt = no refund. I asked to see the manager but they just repeated no receipt = no refund/exchange.

Any suggestions?

  • Without some proof of purchase you are reliant on the goodwill of Argos.
The packaging and stickers only show that the product came from Argos and not that it was bought by your son.
For all they know, it might have been stolen (and I'm not in any way implying that it was).

It might be worth sending an e-mail to the head office of Argos giving them the purchase date and time (if your son can remember this) asking if they would be able to exchange it without a receipt.
  • Thank you.

I'm surprised by this as I took my hoover back to Argos as it stopped working after 6 weeks & like you I didn't have a receipt. I showed them the transaction on my banking app on my phone & they could see the price I paid was the same as the price the hoover was. They agreed to exchange for a new hoover

Go to a different Argos store. Buy a new one. Take it out of the box and use it. Put the faulty unit in the box and return for a refund the following day with the receipt. You're happy, Argos are happy, everyone wins.

That does qualify as proof of purchase but as the OP's son paid cash they are unable to do this.

If you have an apron day and time he purchased, insist they go through their records.

An approx(imate) day and time. Obviously Autocorrect at work over zealously. :)
