  • Not sure what you mean there - perhaps a picture would help.
  • What about a pipe collar?

I'd fill it with scrunched-up paper, then plaster over it.

This wouldn't this stop the "unwanted guests" and it might actually encourage them as mice and rats love to chew and shred paper and cardboard as they often use it for nesting material.

If a collar can't be obtained or fitted then it really needs something like fine mesh chicken wire in the hole then some sort of insulation such as fibreglass followed by another piece of mesh on top of the insulation.
Providing that the wire that is on the inside of the wall is rigid enough, plaster can then be built up on this as it will give a very good surface for it to stick to.

Thank you for the response can ask can i use steel wool and then apply expanding foam or plaster would be best
  • I wouldn't use steel wool for a few reasons, the main one being that it is very flexible and wouldn't offer much in the way of support for the plaster or foam to adhere to.

Steel wool also rusts very easily and if/when this was to happen, it would basically fall apart and wouldn't provide any barrier to mice or rats.
Expanding foam would work and if you use this, it would be best to leave it about 1/4" below the surface of the wall to allow plaster to then be applied. You don't have to use plaster but you will get a far better finish if you do.

Thank you If i use expanding foam from the inside as hole is in the hole is inside would it be OK and still wool ?
  • Nooo, don't use steel wool.

How big is this hole, can you not just bung some sand and cement mix in it, then when it's hardened enough, finish with plaster or filler?
