Where to meet new people, form connections and friendships?

I am looking to meet new people. At the moment my social life is stale and I am fed up with it, so really want to start meeting new people and bring some excitement into my life again. I don't know where to look though. Most meet up sites are just dating sites in disguise because everyone is there for dating, and when you state only after meeting new people, people still assume you want to date lol. Any places you would suggest for meeting new people?

Bit depends what age group you are in and where you live. If you are over 40 and have a branch nearby I would recommend Spice. They do lots of interesting events, but they aren't a particularly young group.0 -
Id also suggest meet up0

Hobbies/interests/career development/more interest in your neighbours
Dating sites are good as well.
Do not expect results straight away , nothing worse than someone going on a tennis course just to find friends, you have to be genuinely interested in an activity as it takes time - years sometimes - to build a connection. The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.0 -
Something fun to learn at further education? I've considered learning another language but there's loads of other things from creative to more helpful resources.
The gym, Zumba or most other fitness as it releases feel good factor as well.
I've also met people through slimming club.
Always found it way easier in work environment when it's a brand new team or start up, people are so much more friendlier.0 -
Another vote for meetup, I made loads of friends from my local one.0
