Smart meter

BG have decided to give me smart meters because I became a customer via MSE Energy Club, or maybe they just want to give me them.

Do I want them?

Pros and cons.

There are loads of threads on here with the Pro's & Con's of Smart Meters. Take a look at those to help make your mind up.

However, be aware that BG and all the other suppliers are trying to shift the old models that won't work, as a Smart Meter, if you change suppliers.

Search smart meters on this forum and you will find many threads on this subject. BG will be offering you a SMETS1- compliant meter which means that the meter will revert to dumb status should you decide to switch. SMETS2- compliant meters should start rolling out late next year. This will have full switching capability. Personally, I would wait.

PS this meter is costing you about £400 - your share of the £12Bn roll out cost. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT A SMART METER even if the supplier suggests otherwise.

The smart meter (if you have it fitted )r is NOT costing you personally a penny If they don t change the meter for a new smart meter they will be putting a normal credit meter in anyway as your old meter is past its sell by date. Why Hengus has come out with this ridiculous scare tactic idea that you are personally £400 down on the deal is beyond me. Ludicrous statement. He has revealed himself now as part of the anti smart brigade on this forum who now dominate and give everyone the same advice. He has it got it right in saying wait for the switchable smarts due some time next year but it could be years before one makes it to your property. Personally I would allow them to fit whatever meter they like because even if you get a cheap digital non smart meter installed, that too is due for removal at some time in the future so you will undergo two meter installs whatever meter you decide to accept. Your old one need changing..

Just tell them if you don't want one.

To balance up the bias, tell them if you want one. See what I mean about the members on here and their anti smart bias.Sailor Sam has just posted a link to a blatant money making tawdry website which wants to charge you £4. 50 for a tag to hang on your meter., StopsmartmetersUK is even worse, hard core full on loonies who think the miniscule RF waves from the smart meter will harm you , even though you are surrounded by wifi waves all day.
You may well be at least five years before they get around to you to fit the mythical SMETS 2 s. Meantime , get a smart meter for those years before these meters are fitted.

    Just say NO.

Reason? I am very happy submitting readings once a month.
Everything is ticking along perfectly. Any smart device is just going to introduce some bizarre complication I don't need.

Rubbish - I am referring to statements made to the HoC's Science and Technology Committee. No one is suggesting that a bill for £400 will arrive on the OP's door mat; the cost will be recouped from consumers in the form of higher energy bills in the future. No doubt you will also say that the revised guidance on savings per household per year of £11 is also rubbish. I would agree 100%: the OP will only save the £11 if they reduce their energy consumption. You can do this without a smart meter. My view, FWiW, is that this is the worst programme roll out since the demise of the ill-fated and hugely expensive NHS patient database, and I see little evidence that anybody has got a grip on it.

From the evidence (should we all be worried):

The most complex system in the world

The most expensive system in the world

Based on technology which is heading to be obsolete by the early 2020s.

No you don't because they are simply trying to offload useless first generation meters to meet roll out quotas that they have agreed.

The smart meter program has been running for many years now and it still a complete mess with many problems still yet to be resolved.

If you do accept a smart meter now, you could well be stuck with an old one for many years. They will eventually get around to upgrading it to the later spec that is compatible with the DCC and switching suppliers but if you already have a smart meter, there will be millions ahead of you in the queue that will be dealt with first.

No other country has made such a monumental mess of introducing smart meters and we are all paying for this incompetence.

There are good valid reasons that the majority on here recommend that you refuse until they sort out their mess, which could still be years off.

Say NO you know it makes sense!

I'm getting smart meters installed, I couldn't care less whether they're smart 1 or smart 2 or whatever.

As long as they tell me and SG how much gas and electricity I'm using and my bills are correct what does it matter?

I used to have an Eon monitor but the novelty of knowing how much electricity I was using in real time soon wore off so I doubt if me getting a display in my house will make any difference to my usage.

    .

You will if you decide to switch as you will have to start reading the meters again.
