Email problem

I would have put this to my web-host, but they are a pain and can only be contacted by email, which can take for ever. The problem is that I am receiving emails sent to addresses that I have either deleted or have never existed. One of the senders is Curries Electrical, and there is no unsubscribe tab on the emails, so I can't contact them ( the send address is 'no reply') I have deleted the address that I originally supplied to them, but the emails arrive, nevertheless, at the rate of five or six a week. Anybody know how this can happen. It's very annoying. Thanks in advance.

if you have a domain then you will get mail delivered to anything at your domain.
    e.g. tim@domain.com littletim@domain.com boxofchocolates@domain.com etc.

You can probably set up a rule on the server to only deliver certain addresses to you or if you use a mail programme like Outlook you can create a rule to filter out the ones you don't want.

With my domain I get 5 email addys that can be collected by different users each with their own login.
If I had a account of tim@domain.com and I deleted it so its not assigned to one person any mail then sent to tim@domain.com after would get sent to the main account.
You may find it easier to re create the account Currys are sending to and just don't poll that account for mail.

If none of this is relevant let me know what your setup is and ill try to help.

Agree with baza; I'm not sure why Currys wouldn't have an unsubscribe button but all you need to do is set up a rule to filter them to the junk folder. This is made easier if they are the only things addressed to that email.
  • I can have up to one hundred email addresses and I usually allocate shops, etc. individual email addresses. I am also receiving emails from a company that I have never contacted, but who have used an email address which does not exist. I have got, for instance, John@etc. and they have sent an email to John4@etc. How that has reached me, I can't understand. You can see the problem I would have attempting to explain this to my Web host (Falcoda) by email. Replies take a couple of days. I am due for renewal, shortly, and I will probably go somewhere with better support. Thanks anyway. I shall attempt to contact them. Edit. By the way, I have deleted the mailbox used by Curry's, but the emails still keep coming.

Specific emails go to specific inbox's anything else goes to the main account.
I explained it in post #2

That's quite normal and how it's supposed to work. If somebody misspells your name by accident, you don't really want it disappearing off into the ether.

Spammers 'spoof' email addresses based on a domain and all I do is send them, unopened, to the junk folder. Hakuna matata.

NB you don't need to create an email for each shop, their emails will come to your main (catchall) address anyway.

It must take you hours just to check your emails. ;)
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Thats what Thunderbird is for. :)

I have a load of email accounts, aol, yahoo, gmail etc etc.

An AOL one was one i used everywhere when i first got onto the net. So its been around the block and used for a few dodgy websites.

I get a bit of spam, but oddly when it hit the news about cracking some spam ring the number dropped for 48 hours then back to normal.

The rest of my accounts get very little spam.

Email does not just "disappear off into the ether". If an email can't get delivered, the sender usually gets an bounce with the error message in it.

Catchall accounts are quite handy, but it's not a good idea to have them on the main domain. This gets you tons of spam.

Instead, create a subdomain with a catchall. A subdomain is not so easy to guess, whereas your domain is in the whois for everyone to see. This way you don't need to create a new email address for each company. Once you start getting spam to one of these addresses, create a filter on the server to move these emails to the junk folder.

Yes, but then you have to rely on the sender working out what's happened. If spelling's not one of their strong subjects, they may not.
