Sky broadband offers

Hi,
when listing the various offers from ISPs it would be useful to mention their "quirks". For instance I have just found out that Sky are very keen that their hub is used. The username and password to get on to their internet is hidden away. I did ask this of Sky when I was investigating and did not get a proper answer which should have been a clue to not go ahead. But I did want to save some money from my current ISP. So as I have my own router then that can not be used.
Why does Sky have to be so difficult? Oh well just 12 months to go ....

  • I think you can get the username and password from the router if you try - the Sky user forum definitely used to have info and probably still does. Alternatively Sky took over O2 Broadband a while back and I think a generic O2 username and password used to work, although I left Sky a while back.
Both the above apply only to normal broadband; I think Sky uses different authentication for fibre, called MER, IIRC.

Yes, it's on the back, as well as being supplied on a little card, but is it not just Sky specific?

I just looked at a sky BB order and it had the option to charge be £20 for the Q hub.

If I were to select No, do they supply a basic router ?

With any ADSL router there are possibly 3 pairs if usernames/passwords.
    * to log on to the router to configure it.
    * for wifi devices to access the router
    * for the router to log on to the ADSL service. This dates back to the time when the ADSL service might come from a different provider than the landline, before local loop unbundling. It migh not be so relevant now, if the ADSL service is with the same provider as the landline. Presumably they can recognise their customers by CLI.

The OP is talking about the username and password that the router uses to connect to broadband. It's hidden on Sky (hence my suggestions above), whereas for Plusnet it's usually <username>@plusdsl.net with a password.
  • Have any existing Sky tv customers got a good deal when switching over to Sky Broadband too, Ive been offered their broadband for 12 months for £22 which is their new customer rate.

Is that the fibre or ADSL?

If ADSL (plus line rental) I've just renegotiated my ADSL and got free BB with £17.40 line rental. You may need to try live chat to get it rather than the phone as they have better offers, try asking for £50 credit while you're there as you never know.

I left two months ago, as I thought that was a bad offer, but it looks good, now with the £5 increase.

I've not read of anyone having a credit on phone/broadband; just on tv.

I believe it's not difficult to find those details however you would need to Google it yourself I think rather than someone posting it direct on here.
  • Thanks for all the replies.
Yes the answer can be found on google using a network analyser like wireshark and I have set up my own router.
Really the purpose of the message was to warn people that Sky is different. Depending on ones perspective they either make everything very simple or very difficult.
