Getting Rid Of Urine Smell

My 4 year old son keeps wetting himself in the night and trying to hide it.

It has happened a lot in his bedroom and the smell in the room is now unbearable. We tried getting the carpets shampooed but that hasnt worked so we have now decided to get a new carpet laid.

Yesterday we took up the old carpet and the underlay but this morning it still smells in there.

How can I get rid of it if it has soaked right through to the boards?

Is the smell definitely just in the carpet and not the mattress too? Perhaps try some of the products made to remove urine smell.

We have bought new beds and everything, not built them yet until new carpet goes down.

Right now the room is completely empty and still smells. Window was open all day yesterday too.

You could try some of the stuff that's sold for pet smells - Urine Off or Simple Solution. Most pet shops have them and they work well.

Not sure if it works for human urine, but when i had problems with my dog, white vinegar worked quite well, house stunk like a fish and chip shop for a few days but it cleared the urine smell.

Yup. I've used watered down white vinegar and bicarb before, scrubbed on the floorboards.

The mattress could be a terrible culprit too.

Wouldn't laminate be a better idea for the room for the moment? Nobody wants to have exactly the same problem in a few weeks.

If he is wetting himself in the night, how is it getting on the floor? That sounds like a lot of wee for a four year old.

As above, I'd be fitting lino until the problem is resolved. A waterproof undersheet too. Tricky one though as you don't want to traumatise him.

On the floorboards, I'd definitely try something designed to remove urine smell. I'd actually get two different brands. With pet wee, I sometimes find that it takes a couple of goes to remove the smell but by the time it's done my brain associates the smell of the product with urine so I can't tell if the smell has completely gone. Using a different product that smells different for the final application convinces my brain that it is!

I'd replace the carpet with lino rather than carpet or laminate. It can be cheap and cheerful and doesn't have to look rubbish, then you can have a new carpet when it's sorted.

He is getting out of bed to go to the toilet but doing it literally as soon as he stands up.

He has a big rug in his room so he initially covered it with that. It went unnoticed for a day or two until it started to smell. We actually blamed the cat at first lol.

He had a waterproof cover on his mattress but that was a toddler bed. We have now bought a full sized bed which I will build tomorrow with a proper mattress (with a waterproof coating on the top).

New carpet has gone down this afternoon and room is currently free of urine smells. Fingers crossed...

Good luck! I'd consider a cheap but thick rug where he gets out of bed, possibly with something waterproof or water-resistant underneath it, just in case.
