    I think there are more influential factors than the distance of the cabinet from the house (when you aren't talking metres). I can see our cabinet across the road (within 100 metres) but still get a poor 5.3Mbps feed (admittedly only on ADSL).

    When you are on ADSL it is the line length from your house to the exchange that matters. When you are on FTTC it is the line length from your house to the cabinet that matters. So in your situation on ADSL it doesn't make a huge difference if your cabinet is over the road or at the other end of the road.
