On Economy 7, nearly tricked by German Clay Heaters salesman

Electrical wholesalers website with various storage heaters - still worth shopping around but gives a good guide as to typical prices.

I don't think sending a text cancelling the contract/order to the salesman would count as actual notice of cancellation.
I think you need to write to the company cancelling the contract and send it by recorded delivery.
Far better if you can get the documents back from him - he did leave you with copies, yes? - which you can yourself copy and write CANCELLED over in big bold letters together with the date and enclose them with your cancellation letter.
If the COMPANY do not get your WRITTEN cancellation within the cooling off period then the salesman can claim you never cancelled.
A text is not good enough.0 -
He did reply by text saying that he 'didn't send the paperwork off to the office at all'. I will phone the company up on Monday and double check that was the case.0

New storage heaters probably are more "efficient" in that they will have better insulation and leak less heat leaving more available for evening use.0

That is not really relevant. For all you know he is just a freelance rep on commission. Your contract is not with him, it is with the supplier. If they deny that you cancelled properly under the terms of the contract, then claiming that you did it 'by text message' is not going to help your defence. What does your contract say about your right to cancel?
As above, you need to cancel in writing, sent registered post, to the supplier, not to the rep.
I am bemused as to why you did not do your research before signing. What was the problem with asking for 24 hours to think about it?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Naturally he wanted the sale there and then, offering a £600 discount. I replied saying that I wasn't expecting to have to make a decision there and then, having only heard of these German heaters two hours previously. I said I'd need more time to then carry out a bit of research, to which he replied that we could let him know first thing the following morning, which seemed half reasonable, even if the whole process was a bit unethical. I'm pretty thorough normally in researching any purchase, which is why I said that I couldn't make a decision there and then.
We all make slip ups, and hopefully learn from them, eh?0 -
But anyone selling to you on the basis of 'I can give you £x discount, but only if you sign today (or tomorrow morning' is clearly not to be trusted. These tactics are the same as those used by national double glazing companies: there is no discount, they just quote you whatever they think they can get away with.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
