Worth a try they didn't seem to bothered about losing me when I renewed in July. I went online, found what the other providers could do it for and asked them to match it.

I'm on U/L fibre (52mbps) at £10, no calls and line rental £17.99 but had to sign for 18 months
  • Hi,

you might get a better deal if you go for line rental saver.

I did a uswitch comparison, found someone cheaper, told them I wanted to leave because I'd found the same deal cheaper, and they matched it.

The first person I called didn't budge though. The magic words are "I'm going to leave".......

I tried to get Plusnet to lower the Fibre/line rental to £28/month to match VF and First Utility but they would not budget over chat, telephone or even Facebook.
  • Just a warning - be aware that any deal that Plusnet offer ties you in for a period of time with a cost penalty if you want to leave before it has expired.

I've been gradually swapping over to a Gmail account for all my emails from a Plusnet email address for if I want to swap ISPs for a better deal. Plusnet then out of the blue called me offering a better monthly deal fixed for 24 months.

When I asked if I could still give a month's notice they reluctantly admitted I would have to pay a fee to leave within the 24 months, so I declined the offer. I'm currently on the 10 gig per month legacy broadband deal and they were offering unlimited for £1 less per month fixed for 24 months. I refuse to be tied in.

Having a rolling contract is the exception, rather than the rule, from (all?)providers. Most people have to agree to a minimum term in exchange for a deal.

If you won't accept a minimum term from a new provider or a changed deal with your current provider then you pretty much are tied in - and to a pretty poor deal too from the sound of it.

All of the cheapest deals I've ever found have included cashback for switching and it makes it so cheap that no supplier is prepared to match it.

Switching is easy if you don't use your ISP's email address, I try not to get the ISP router either and rely on unbranded equipment or equipment from the last time I was with them, or the last time a friend was with them.

I wouldn't sign up for a 24 month contract, but as long as you are planning on living in the same place 12 months from now and aren't looking to switch line type in that time (i.e. imminent fibre roll out) then being tied in shouldn't cause you any issues.

You can get rolling contracts from a few providers, but they aren't competitive. The only reason to use them would be if you were moving into a property for a couple of months & only if using your mobile data wasn't going to be good enough.
