How to visit downtown abbey?

Hi my partner loves downtown abbey and I was told you can actually visit there on certain times of the year? Has anyone ever been? And with us living in Manchester I'm guessing it's best to stay close for a day or two so would there be anywhere close by to this?
Thanks
Thanks

You do realise it is fiction? Assuming yes then search for Highclere Castle near Newbury for the main building don't know about the village.0 -
Yes, Highclere Castle for the main house - and it has quite a history itself, aside from its location use:

Other locations in Oxfordshire here:

There's a trip being run through The Ritz hotel. Two nights at the Ritz, meal in the restaurant, guided tour of the house with champagne lunch.
A snip at £4,500 a couple!!0 -
I have looked into it a bit more thanks and noticed that there is the castle and cardens for £15 pp or castle, gardens and exhibition(pic of mummy) for £22 pp, which is best for Downton Abbey fan?

Also looking at close by in newbury there is a travelloge which is £53 per night or £79 for 2 night stay for two of us so seems not too bad really doing it that way, the drive from hotel to castle is only 7 min drive.0 -
As pointed out above, it's fictional-filming was done at 15 different locations, according to this article.

The village scenes were shot in Bampton, Oxfordshire-a long way from Highclere Castle. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

If you like rabbits, you could visit Watership Down while you're down there.0

It looks like the Exhibition relates to Egypt (Lord Caernavon, who lived at Highclere, funded Howard Carters discovery of Tutankhamens tomb) so of limited interest to a Downton Abbey fan - although I've not been myself (or ever watched DA) so can't say for sure.0 -
The house is quite nice but only open on selected days as the family still live there. The Egypt exhibition is interesting but not massive.
I went to a wedding there so we had exclusive use and a tour of the house and museum but that was before Downton was filmed so they may have beefed up the series tie-in opportunities since then.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans
