When my desktop had only a HDD I never turned it off.
But now I've got a desktop with a HDD and an SSD do I still leave it switched on or should I turn it off at night?

It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

SSD or not it is always best practice to turn your machine off overnight.
It will run much better with a fresh start daily0 -
It was only when I started turning off my old machine that problems developed. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0

I find it best to leave machines on overnight so they can do updates when it does not bother me.
Though a restart now and then does helkp things. Although a log off and on again is probably just as good.0 -
This was the recommendation in the old days of "Dial Up" internet connections - it used to take hours to download updates - but nowadays, no longer relevant !I find it best to leave machines on overnight so they can do updates when it does not bother me.

Do you want to expand on that a bit ?
Not really. I could go on for days as to why your remark is totally wrong. I'll say this though, as far as wear and tear goes, you're more likely to wear out a computer/laptop by switching it off regularly. If you use it for 8-12 hours a day, switching it off for a few hours at night will do it no good whatsoever.0 -
Apart from component wear and tear (which is absolutely miniscule), and focussing on my comment that your machine will run better with a fresh start to the operating system,
Please provide one single reason why what i say is total !!!!!
You dont need to "go on for days", just provide one single reason, Just one, to indicate why you think your computer WONT run better with a fresh start of the OS
I could go on for days too, but ill start with one reason :
Any programs that have not exited and propperly released any memory they reserved will be gone and the memory free, making the system perform better.
Over to you0 -

Why would it run significantly better? Do you even understand how operating systems work?0
