I have no problem with there being a fee at all and I can completely see why it is there, but I haven't just changed my mind and to charge such an extortionate amount when I wish to remain a customer is hard to get my head round.

I'm sure you can understand that it is difficult not to feel swindled when they are being so inflexible - I can't even take my business elsewhere, so they have me over a barrel.

But you are not remaining a customer .
You are in contract at premise A and moving to B and at some time in the future moving to XYZ .I don't see where you are being swindled when you signed up to a product at your current address not here and some place else .Its always possible that when you do enter into a new contract that your current ISP may not supply that property .
You can take your business elsewhere once you close current account .They are not forcing you to do anything but pay your lawful. contract .
Post one i had some sympathy all gone now as you try to wheedle your way out of your obligations .

I can't believe that this is the type of society we live in now where people are actually defending the company over somebody who has just been made homeless.

I'm not trying to wheedle out of anything, all I want to do is continue paying them as normal for the 18 months I agreed to. If they do not have a backup system in place when there is not an active address then how is it my fault? Every other company I have contracts with has either let me cancel for a reasonable fee or offered to put a block on my account until I wish to reactivate it. Talk Talk is the only one that has offered no solutions and demanded such a high fee that I cannot hope to pay it.

You agreed to an 18 month contract for them to supply phone and broadband at a particular address, as you are changing address you have broken the contract that is hardly their fault, the choice is to transfer to a new address or cancel, when you took out the contract you agreed to any cancellation fees if necessary, all ISP's work in the same way.

I know that I will be breaking the contract, which is why I have been desperately looking for a solution to prevent me from doing that. Clearly there isn't one, and when they're making so much money on this, then I can see why they aren't in a hurry to provide one.

All I can say is that I hope nobody finds themselves in a similar situation. I have done everything I can to do the right thing and keep paying them, and people just seem indifferent at best.

You are not homeless, you are moving in with your parents.
Do what everybody has allready told you, contact Talktalk and arrange payment terms that stops your credit being trashed.

Its only their kindness preventing me from being homeless. I think I've had my question answered anyway and I will have to arrange payment terms with them.

Setting myself aside though, I still stand by the my belief that it is morally wrong to ask for hundreds of pounds in cancellations fees without offering any other options. Maybe all ISPs get away with this, but other companies are not that callous and I don't think people should put up with it just because they think it is unlikely to affect them

When you eventually move to a new address good luck finding a provider whose contract does not have similar punitive repercussions if you break the contact terms..
  • I agree with the complaint. I have just been given a quote off TalkTalk for £240 for leaving my contract early. How can the cancellation fees be the same as my monthly contract. Surely a termination fee should be a percentage and not the full amount. Virgin gas and electric has come under fire for their extortionate exit fees and I hope these greedy companies rain in these charges. As for TalkTalk when my contract ends I will be lookong for a fairer company to do business with.

That is the standard ISP charge .
You signed to a contract for xx months and they want you to honor that contract .

Am i missing something here ??

You are in a contract - so just keep paying it !!??

TT wont care, or even notice most likely as long as you keep paying the monthly bill they will be fine.

They are still getting the money they are contracted to receive , even if you are not using the broadband.
If anything, it's GOOD for them - as they are getting paid and not having to provide a service.
