None of us here know whether the owners insurer will cover his loss!

We can only go from what we have been told

The op started the thread by telling us his insurer is telling him his doc cover does not apply to the vehicle he has damaged.

This indicates that he was relying on his DOC cover as no other insurance was in place.

(If he were covered by the owners insurance then DOC cover doesn't come into it (you cannot use DOC cover if you are covered anyway)

Why would the OP tell us he intends reporting himself for driving with no insurance??

The post telling us that if you damage the vehicle you are driving using DOC cover the damage will be covered by the owners insurance is dangerous advice. If you use DOC then there is no cover at all for damage to the vehicle you are driving!

    No.

You ( dangerously) misunderstand how DOC works.

When you use DOC cover to drive someone's car then you have third party cover only.

Any damage to the car you are driving isn't covered at all, so if there is no other party to blame, then repairs, car hire etc all got to be paid out of the driver's or owners pocket.

It is dangerous to think the car you let a friend use telling you he's covered on his own insurance will be OK if he damages it!!
I don't know where you got the idea that I 'dangerously think' that at all.
In a discussion with an insurer many years ago, I was informed that if someone drove my vehicle using DOV cover, any damage to my vehicle would be covered under my own fully comp policy, just like it would be covered, if it was burnt out or stolen etc when I wasn't there. Maybe it depended on the quality of your cover . . .

Moot point anyway, I would never lend my vehicle(s) to anyone, to drive under DOV/ DOC cover, I also wouldn't drive 'other' vehicles under my DOV cover unless it was absolutely necessary. Too much aggro if it all goes wrong.

    Well...

Hmm. A more likely explanation is that either you or the call-centre muppet at the other end got the wrong end of a stick somewhere. It's never, ever worked like you describe it. The person driving your car would always have been driving it under their own policy, and would have been responsible for damage caused by them. Their DOC may have been fully comp, so would have covered your vehicle, but more likely was always that it was third party, so they would have been personally liable.

And, if you're telling people that they can claim off the car's normal policy, that's because you think it's true, and it is dangerous because they may find themselves without the cover they were expecting, and with a very large bill...

    Whoever informed you was wrong.

Your poor advice is "dangerous" because others reading this thread in future will be mislead and could end up allowing a friend to use their car thinking that the third party cover you get with DOC cover is just a myth!

Have the decency to stand corrected and edit your posts giving your misleading "advice"

It all depends on your insurance. My insurance gives me fully comp on any car I drive whether I own it or not except if a hire car or a car ordinarily kept at my address. More usually, fully comp policies often but not always give third party cover only on DOV.

Yes, but your policy won't cover your repairs if you allow an uninsured driver to use it.

OP, you need to speak to an underwriter at AXA and find out if they class a VW transporter people mover as a Van/Minibus/Car, while your there ask if a Ford Galaxy/Citreon C4 Grand Picasso is a car or minibus. Personally I would say its a van derived people carrier rather than a car derived van so you may have an uphill struggle.

Speak to the Ombudsmen as well to get their opinion if AXA are being fair with their decision before taking to further.

If this went to court then you will need to convience a Judge that this vehicle is a car, and the AXA policy should cover the Third Party claim, get this wrong and you will be in for a lot more costs.

    Good lucks

My insurance allows any driver to drive in addition to the named drivers provided they have correct licence.

Ok then it won't pay if you allow an unlicensed driver to use it. ;)
