This is not a referendum about the EU.

no its not, but it could (and is suspected to) be used in a similar way to that of Brexit and the US presidential vote for many people to vote for change

Italy have been struggling as an EU member, we all know that, and so do they, although this is not an EU vote, the result could pave the way to one, and will probably be seen by many italians as an opportunity to get out

Another large gust to the house of cards

Turnout around 70% and looks like a victory for 'No' based on exit polls but apparently these are not always accurate in Italy - results will be in soon enough though.

Renzi may step down if so (speech at midnight apparently) - or may not - but either way the lack of structural reform means he or any successor will find it equally impossible to get anything radical through.

Once again the people feel they have not been listened to and are rejecting the dopey Establishment.

The Asian Tiger economies quickly recovered from thier late 90s crash, thanks to being in full control of thier economic weaponry. Club Med nations are long suffering from being in the EU straight jacket.

Meanwhile the Establishment centre ground got nowhere near power in Austria, again new politics is being delivered. The far right came close to winning, that's profound.

Let's this be a warning to the authoritarian liberal elite in Britiain
  • While some saw the plebiscite as a vote of no confidence in the prime minister, others – including those on the left and some within Renzi’s own party – saw the referendum as strictly a question of the topic at hand: whether or not to change the constitution.

Indeed some – like a former communist the Guardian chatted with yesterday – voted No precisely because of concerns that rightwing forces were gaining traction. The reforms were seen by these opponents as weakening Italy’s democracy and potentially handing too much power to whoever inhabits the prime minister’s residence at Palazzo Chigi

About a 60:40 no vote it seems.

70% turn out which is apparently a lot for Italy and about as many as voted in the eu referendum

Once again Conrad misunderstands things and tries to frame them as something that suits his narrative.

A nice little spin. You surely should take up your destined career in politics.

Yes, the authoritarian elite who are now using the brexit distraction to push through even more authoritarian bills such as the snoopers charter and telling us what sort of pornography is good for us. The same elite who wanted to put all foreigners working here on lists and name and shame companies who employed too many.

Wait, they're not liberal, they are the authoritarian conservative elite, so that's ok then.

The euro and stock markets claw all loses back ? Seems fishy to me, could the EU QE programme and friends held some powder back for days like this?
Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.

Indeed so, which is why most of us oppose the majority of EU countries that demand foreigners and their own citizens to register on a list evrry time they move. Of course some people only think such things are wrong if done in the UK.
  • No surprise that the euro and markets have brushed this off as a non issue.

Nothing to panic about as the referendum outome was to keep the current constitutional arrangements.
