Good Morning all , and RR best wishes to your OH

Its my eldest DDs birthday today, and thinking back to 49 years ago it was snowing when she was born and freezing cold :) and I was luckily tucked up warm in the local St Mary's Maternity hospital in Croydon.
Golly that was a very cold winter. My OH collected me from the hospital on the 14th as in those days you had to stay in for 12 days !!!.

On the way home he said 'I've not got around to doing any washing up and ran out of crockery so went to your brothers house to eat , and I forgot to get some coal delivered, so it may be a bit cold in the flat ' !!!

I was silently seething as with a new born baby I wasn't looking forward to getting indoors after the warmth of the hospital. Well we arrived home and I carried our new little bundle upstairs, and when I opened the door there was a roaring fire in the grate and it was all decorated with christmas dekkies and spotlessly clean, and a small tree was lit with lights.

On the mirror over the fire he had written in soap 'Welcome home Mum and baby Michelle' I never forget that scene and every year since then my decorations have gone up the night before my DDs birthday and up until he sadly passed away in 2003 he would write every year on the mirror in soap 'Happy Christmas to us all'.
We had been married for four years and up until then I had never bought anything Christmassy at all for indoors, as I had lost my lovely Mum when I was 16 just before Christmas, in fact she was buried on Christmas Eve and never really felt very festive at all at Christmas at all.

My OH said that from then on we were going to make an effort if nothing else than the baby would grow up with good Christmas memories. Two years later on the 19th December I gave birth to my second daughter (this time at home ) and he was always insistent that no matter what, we had a tree and decorations, and they were put up.

Even in 2003 when I really wasn't feeling at all like celebrating my two DDs came round the night before and said 'Come on Mum, Dad would be cross if they didn't go up as usual'and we still write on the mirror in soap 'Happy Christmas to all here '
yesterday my DGS came to my house and we put up the tree and dekkies as usual so the tradition carries on from 49 years ago.Eldest DD texted me this morning and said hers went up last night as well :):):)
Tonight I will go to her house with her presents and cards and admire her dekkies and tree as I do every year on her birthday It really doesn't feel like 49 years ago, but at least its not snowing :)
My youngest DD Tessa who was also born in December, was born when it was snowing and when I got married in 1962 it was snowing then as well.
Have any of the rest of you have any Christmas traditions in your families ?

Fingers crossed we don't have any snow this winter as it means I have to stay indoors in case I fall over The joys of growing old eh :)

This afternoon I have History club and we are discussing Alan Bennett his life and works ,should be interesting.

Hope you all have a good day whatever you are doing

    <<hugs to Lainey Coxy11 and Hilly >>

Take care chums and keep warm if possible

  • Good morning chums,

Yesterday was a crazy busy day and evening with work so I when I got home I just collapsed in bed and watched the apprentice.

Nothing particularly exciting to do today however I do need to go Carphone Warehouse for the 4th time in a week around the same issue. I'm not one to complain but I think I need to. Really disappointing.

redruby - Hope you feel better soon and lovely news on the car, such a kind gesture.

Have a nice day everyone :)
  • Good morning, my day off though I may have to take some phone calls. But don't have to go out doing things at least.

JackieO, your post was so lovely to read. Our traditions are a bit suspended as we are in limbo a bit but we will do some of them.

I must do some housework today, I mostly leave it for Friday's other than he essentials like loo and washbasin plus picking up the stuff that certain persons leave everywhere.

Right, will start. I am fortified by toast and marmite.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

Well I was just sitting here feeling a bit glum and wondering if I can be bothered to decorate for Christmas but that's given me a bit of a kick up the a--e.

We enjoyed Henning Wehn although I don't think he was as funny as the last time we saw him. It was nice to go out with DS and DiL though.

We're hoping to hear about DH's op today, when he rang two days ago they told him that they'd just been talking about him so at least he is on their radar now.

Today is going to be a housework day.

    Good morning everyone :hello:

It's a lot milder here this morning, no frost here at all. Hubby and the girls are at work/school and I have just put a big pot of soup on for lunch.

I have just had a message from my mum in law that hubby's sister has had a heart attack and is in hospital. MIL and FIL were supposed to be coming here to visit tomorrow and had booked a hotel etc but i've told them to stay put as I am sure she wants to be with her daughter at the moment. I'm a bit sad not to see them and obviously very worried about sister in law but hopefully she will make a good recovery as she is only 50 and a very active healthy person.

What a lovely post JackieO, we have our traditions too including not having a roast dinner for the whole of Advent so Christmas dinner is really looked forward too and enjoyed. Christmas morning the girls still come into our room with their stockings to open them. I then go downstairs and make bacon rolls for everyone and I am mean and say that they are not allowed to open their presents until the rolls are eaten and everyone has had a drink.

Christmas Eve the girls and I put our Christmas cd on and prepare all the veg, make the pigs in blankets and get the dining table ready with our Christmas tablecloth and napkins. In the evening they get a new pair of pyjamas to wear and we play card games or a board game.

In the run up to Christmas, we do a Christmas themed jigsaw over a few days and then I have some lego sets that we make together. I absolutely love this time of year, spending lots of time with the girls and hubby. It's so lovely to see them relax and enjoy themselves.

I hope all the poorly people make a good recovery and sending special hugs to Lainey and her mum, Coxy and LWW.

I hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

Dishwasher is on and need to do a big cooking session and then tidy up the kitchen before dd arrives tonight to stay over and then drive me to the station tomorrow.

Checked the bank account online and a couple of payments have gone in so I don't have to panic about treating us to a meal and shopping trip as well as train and hotel fees.

Defrosted prawns will be added to onions, peppers etc and turned into a rice or pasta dish and mince into a cottage pie.I need to look out a smart overnight bag and pack it first thing in the morning.

It looks as if it is going to be very cold over the next few days so I will look out my warmer hooded coat even if it is not very smart.

Just had an approved food delivery so will have to unpack that and clear away the packaging etc. Nice to have extra dishwasher and laundry capsules, toilet rolls etc. without having to lug it all home.

Hugs to all especially Lainey, coxy, LW and Hilstep.

(((HUGS))) to all who need them today - Coxy, LWW, Lainey, Hilstep come to mind especially.
Caterina I hope you're feeling a bit brighter today - I woke up with a huge BD sitting on me this morning; I suspect it's the lack of a RL dog in my case though. That and my tinnitus driving me totally nuts lately.

I haven't even thought about any decorations; as you know, we celebrate Yule, which is a few days before Christmas Day, but we do normally put stuff up. It's all stored in the loft though, which I can't access, so it's up to Mr LW to fetch it down if he wants decs this year. I have to confess I really and truly cba at present, and won't be bothered if we don't put any up at all.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
