How much wiggle room is there for cash payout from insurance company after accident?

  • Highly frustrating. Might be worth mentioning also that I'm in the east of Scotland, cars seem to always be cheaper in England. Such a frustrating situation though. I also ended up with an injury so it's all such a mess.

Because the engine light is on. Doesn't mean it's any worse than the OP's, with its 'scratches and a tiny ding in the front".

I can post plenty of other £3-400 Almeras if you can't be bothered to check yourself. Based on guide valuations, the £300 the insurer has offered is entirely fair, bordering on generous.
  • Do searches on autotrader for cars of the same make model and similar mileage to yours and use this to as an argument to boost your payout.

Oh well, the whiplash compo will buy something nice at least.

And you wonder why people do it?

We refused the first offer from the insurance company and supplied them with evidence that within a 100 mile radius the price we would need to pay to replace, north of Scotland too, they agreed and increased by over £500, stand your ground for a more reasonable offer taking your location into account.

and when doing this, take into account the advertised prices are the price the seller is willing to negotiate downwards from

last time I tried to negotiate a discount on a car from a dealer I heard a very sarcastic laugh from the salesman before he hung up on me.
Unless you have some hard evidence to back up that these "discounts" are available on every second hand car for sale (which appears to be a myth perpetuated by insurers) I suggest you don't spread it

Though not a valuable car in monetary terms, it's an essential car to me for getting to and from work, and going anywhere from my middle-of-nowehere house.

Frankly, that's not really the insurer's problem, unless you bought a policy that explicitly included a hire car for a specified period after a write-off. Did you?
    Direct Line

Your insurer? Or the other party's?
have offered me £300, which I'm sure you can imagine wouldn't go very far in replacing my car.

It's about fair value for a scruffy 13yo Almera.
They advise it would cost £1752 to repair my car, but say they will not do this.

    No surprise there.
I was under the impression it is my right to ask for my car to be repaired?

No. They will repair up to the market value. Which, on a car like yours, means they won't repair anything.
My car has a market value of between £600-700 depending where I look

Good luck with that. If you think you can prove it, then goferit. You are entitled to the fair market value...
though they claim it's far less due to a couple of scratches and a tiny ding in the front.
...the fair market value for it immediately prior to the collision.

If you disagree with them on what that is, then you can appeal to the financial ombudsman.
