How much wiggle room is there for cash payout from insurance company after accident?

Hi!
I was recently in an accident which was entirely the other people's fault. They ran into the back of me while I was stationary and my car has now been written off. Though not a valuable car in monetary terms, it's an essential car to me for getting to and from work, and going anywhere from my middle-of-nowehere house. Direct Line have offered me £300, which I'm sure you can imagine wouldn't go very far in replacing my car. They advise it would cost £1752 to repair my car, but say they will not do this. I was under the impression it is my right to ask for my car to be repaired?
I'm at a loss as to what rights I have, and the internet is a mixture of guesses and nothing of much use so far. My car has a market value of between £600-700 depending where I look, though they claim it's far less due to a couple of scratches and a tiny ding in the front.
ANY advice, personal experiences similar, etc, would be very much appreciated! Hoping to resolve this asap.

You can't force them to repair it.
Have a look round for cars of a similar age and model. Submit that to them and hopefully they'll increase the offer.0 -
What car is it? It must be awful to be offered so little. Direct Line tried to mug me off with a very poor offer once when I was rear ended. I provided evidence that it was near impossible to find the same car at that price, certainly with as low mileage. They backed down and increased the offer by £300.
Loss adjusters are there to con you out of money. Don't let them.0 -
That's good to know! It's a Nissan Almera. I bought it last year and have since had new brakes, clutch, sump, springs, the works. £300 would barely buy me one listed as MOT fail and for parts, nevermind actually something I can drive. I pay more than £300 a year on insurance, so a very annoying sum to be offered. Thanks for your experience though!0

Unfortunately routine maintenance doesn't add value.

As Franz said, maintenance won't add value. If it's a cat D you could buy it back, they'll offer it you for like 50 quid.
However, they should offer more.0 -
It's a 53reg Nissan Almera.0

That's a joke. 300 quid is an insult.0 -
