not if it's a nokia 6310 , what is your phone? most modern ones can but of course that will come out of your data allowance and assuming your network allows it

sorry should of said, its an iPhone 6. I assumed you connected phone to chromebook via bluetooth (Im a technophobe), but have since read you use the data cable, so I've learned that this morning at least :)

    And I'm with Vodafone

I don't know about iPhones but with my Android phones I have always set the phone up as a portable hotspot and connected my computer to it using wifi.

I have Android. I connect the chromebook to the phone & internet by WiFi.

On phone I switch 'Hotspot & tethering' on
Chromebook wifi will find the phone and connect. First time the phone generates a password to authenticate but after that it connects automatically

. Vodafone allows tethering across all its plans

I use an Asus Transformer (T100TAM) - bought it for £179 , although price on Amazon is now higher. Can be a tablet or a mini-laptop and even has a 500Gb hard-drive for storage.

Find it amazing for the price I paid - really useful for when I don't want to carry around a full size laptop. Battery lasts well too..

Thats great, thanks everyone. Right, 2 last questions I promise J The chromebook I’m getting has 16Gb of storage, so want to expand it and it has a microSD slot and also USB ports, would a large capacity microSD card be better, or one of those flush fitting USB flash drives? What would be better?

And is tethering to my iphone the same as getting a internet dongle? My phone provider are offering 15Gb of data a month for £15 a month, with a free dongle. Are there any advantages over using the dongle compared to your phone?

USB 3.0 should be faster than MicroSD. I'd have a look at something like this
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Flash-Drive-Mbps/dp/B00LLEODCK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1482259052&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+3.0+memory

You may find that the dongle doesn't have drivers for ChromeOS. So you'd be looking at getting a 4G mifi (about £80) which is basically the hotspot part of a phone without the other phone-y bits, or for about £25 you could kludge the dongle with a 4G portable router.

If your phone plan supports it and has enough data that's the easiest option.

Yep, it's stated several times in this thread that a dongle may be no good, as the Chromebook mightn't have the drivers to run it. I prefer to use my phone anyway - no faffing about with cables or dongles, multiple devices can connect at once, over plain old WiFi.
That said, you COULD take the dongle, and take the SIM out of it, and put it into a MiFi device - this is a 4G wireless router basically - it's what you've got in your hall for broadband, except that it connects to the mobile network for internet, instead of your landline. Chromebook (and any other WiFi device) would just see this as a WiFi network.

Memory - I say microSD. You've got the slot, and it's only good for one thing. Leave the USB port for other things.
