I sold a vehicle on Saturday and informed the DVLA online. Today (Tuesday) the road tax has come out of my account as usual but if I go to the government website it shows the vehicle as being untaxed. I'm assuming this has happened as it was done over a bank holiday weekend. When you sell a car you should get a confirmation of vehicle change with the following wording included,
'DVLA will automatically issue a refund for any full remaining months for vehicle tax and cancel any direct debits. The refund will be sent to the address on the V5C log book, which was used.'

The reason your money still came out is because it was too close to your direct debit date to cancel. You need 2 working days to cancel and it being a bank holiday on Monday it didn't count. You will most likely be refunded the difference.
