DVLA are still charging me road tax for a vehicle I sold
I sold a van back in June and I just noticed today I am still being charged tax monthly on the vehicle via direct debit by the DVLA. I left the country for an extended period a couple of days after the sale.
I sent the change of ownership/V5 in to the DVLA via recorded delivery the day after the sale, although I am having difficulty finding the recorded slip. The new owner would have contacted me however if he had not received the V5 since he was very keen that I send the V5 off.
What can I do given this situation? I imagine given the bureaucracy in this country I will not be able to retrieve the monies taken from me by the DVLA or stop them taking direct debits in the future.

Cancel the direct debit with your bank. Write to DVLA and inform them that you have nothing to do with vehicle XXXX XXX since date XX/XX/XXXX.0

Trouble is I forget the exact day I sold the vehicle. Will be looking tomorrow.0

Obviously you should keep a better track of your finances and this could have been sorted out months ago.
But for future reference you can change ownership online this is much faster (and cheaper) than posting away the V5C and will mean the new owner gets their copy much faster.0 -
Did you receive the confirmation of keeper change back from DVLA within four weeks?
Yes, I know you were out of the country. I presume you'd made arrangements for your post to be forwarded...0 -
And you haven't confirmed if YOU cancelled the direct debit.
Let's face it, companies won't go round cancelling them for you.0 -

But just cancelling it isn't wise if you're still legally responsible for taxing it.0
