£1 note

Options
I found an old but torn £5 note and a tatty £1 note in an old bag. My bank paid £5 into my account but said they couldn't honour the £1, even to donate to charity.

It's only £1 but it's a shame to throw it away if a charity can use it, so does anyone know of a bank that will take the note for donation to a charity or take the note from a charity ? (I know that, at one time, some charities had an agreement to be able to cash in obsolete notes/coins.)

Maybe donate it to a charity, alzheimers society is 1.
  • I'd hang on to it, for the historical interest.

Try facebook. There's enough lunatics offering £5 notes with "amazing low numbered AJ12" serial numbers for £20+ that you never know....

Quite a few charities take old currency (and foreign money)- I assume they sell them to dealers. Presumably they take paper money too

  • Was it a real bank that you asked or a former building society?

Co-op bank and I did ask if they could take it for charity.

We have a local charity which collects foreign and old coins, but these have a market value. I seem to remember that banks once allowed charities to redeem obsolete notes, so thought I'd ask.

A couple of years ago I was given about £2,000 in old tenders which my girlfriend at the time had withdrawn from her bank abroad so I took them to Threadneedle Street, filled out a form and they exchanged them for shiny new £50s. I probably wouldn't bother for a quid but if you're local it's a way of seeing inside an interesting building.

You might want to check if it's an English £1 note. The Channel Islands (possibly the Isle of Man too) still use £1 notes.
