Well I suppose I didn't have any pots or pans myself when I had help! I got given a tin opener, and was loaned odds and ends of crockery/cutlery by my housing support. But I don't think it is all that typical at all, since it got mentioned repeatedly as they were sorting my box out, and they asked a few times would I be able to manage with this/that?!

I would imagine that having no gas/electricity to cook with would be a frequent issue though, if you are on a prepayment meter it can be tough to keep them topped up with enough to see you through unexpected delays and crises.

Ah well, I was in my local supermarket and saw the food bank donation basket full with the usual suspects, tinned fish and meat, pasta etc. Left my own trolley with DH and got a nice vegan AND gluten-free shopping, with long life tofu, packets of dried soya mince and falafel mix, even vegan custard. Really glad for this thread, I hope the bits and pieces will go to a vegetarian family and not just scattered around the various packs.

I am definitely going to bring this subject up with the food bank coordinators when I see them next.

For anyone who thinks that being gluten free and/or vegan is a spoiled person's choice: NYAH NYAH NYAH :rotfl:

    Sorry, couldn't resist it! :)
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • I know there are clients of Food Banks who are kettle only, and so I tried to do a days meal for that in one donation, those instant pots of porridge that just need boiling water, golden syrup, a cup a soup, tinned fruit and tuna for a sandwich.
  • I have recently given some of the long life dhals and saag aloo that are in flat foil packs. They weren't expensive in the Asian section of Mr T's and would be vegan as well.

Sharon Astyk makes the point in "Depletion and Abundance" that in times of crisis we crave the comfort foods of our childhood - for me it would be soup and things like mash - but for others it could be entirely different.

But thanks to this thread I will be sourcing some more dairy free items because that's a need our family has and so I will try to address that for others. Thanks for all your ideas.

  • I tend to think that's a "personal opinion" that Sharon Astyk expressed there - ie re craving comfort foods of childhood and not an Objective Fact.

Some people might do so. Others will crave knowing they can continue to eat in their own personal normal way (which may be very different to the way they were fed as children).

My own Personal Opinion is that, if I'd ever been in that position, then I would crave "eating the way I personally normally do" - and that is so different to the way I was brought up eating that it could be on a different planet.

It's "each to their own" on that and some might want "childhood foods". Others will want to think "However different my life is compared to my plan for it - at least I'm still eating my way - if only some of the time".

I know that my own personal take on "If I had ever got into that position" would have been = "Ohmygawd - and, on top of everything else, I'm being expected to eat a lot of junk food and/or old-fashioned food - just to add to the woes I already have:(. I'd feel so much better if I could at least still eat in my own way".

For those of you working for charities in London or in the Oxford area,
I watched a programme on the BBC about "The Felix Project".

This project delivers surplus supermarket food to local charities, lunch clubs and food banks and a lot of it is fresh.

It may be worth contacting them perhaps? HTH x

It was an interesting series especially as the fresh food was going towards feeding people therefore they could take in the fresh food and use it straight away whereas the food banks can't really do that. Also it was giving people the opportunity of a job and indeed a career.

I tend to use the list for what the food bank ask for and fortunately the majority of the people donating aren't patronising the people who have to use the foodbank for asking for what some people seem to consider junk food. At this time of year I always put in tins of biscuits, everyone deserves a treat at Christmas, and some sweets, chocolates for kids. As I have a friend who is gluten free I found some Christmas chocolates in Tesco and have bought some this year and will peruse this thread for some vegan suggestions.

Thank you to the OP and the others who work/support foodbanks.
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

I agree; if I ever had to go back to eating what I was fed as a child...... well, I just do NOT want to go there!

    Absolutely:T

For some of us - it IS extremely important to eat healthily and we honestly believe that (whatever level of health we have) it would be a sight worse if we ate unhealthily.

:)Fresh from receiving a compliment from a total stranger again today about what good skin I have:). Not bad for someone in their 60s to get one like that - and I must be doing something right (ie eating right).

We each probably have a vision in our heads of what is "US" - be it the way we eat/the way we dress/the way we live our lives/etc - and it's important to us.
