What to give vegan at foodbank?

Hi all

Help needed at foodbank please. We have clients who are vegan and don't seem to cook a lot from scratch. Also are allergic to tomatoes and don't eat rice. We are struggling to provide.

Do vegans eat bread? Are there any biscuits that are vegan?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Give them peas and tell them to think themselves lucky they've got anything. Nobody in Belsen turned away food and said "No thanks, I'm vegan".

Vegans don't eat meat, fish or dairy food so in an emergency any tins of vegetable soup or cans of beans or pulses will save them from starvation. I.e. (baked beans, red kidney beans, butter beans, chick peas, lentils. Packets of cereals, (including porridge) dried fruit, mixed nuts should also be suitable

Bread and biscuits will often contain butter or animal fat. Some will contain vegetable oil which should be OK. You could try Googling "bread or biscuits suitable for vegans" to see what the internet throws up up

I personally think veganism is a bit of a fetish too far and if people are that fussy about their food, they only have themselves to blame if they go hungry. Sounds harsh, but as Pastures New has commented, if you are really starving, standing on your principles is somewhat foolish and life endangering.

Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients.
Takes a lot of label reading but there are plenty of vegan suitable foods if you're prepared to put the time and effort in.
Very kind of you to help, thank you.

Lots of suggestions here but none of them seem to me to provide a well rounded healthy diet.

The Waitrose offers are particularly helpful as all products are listed individually in a booklet of all their suitable vegan foods. .

You know I do think peeps take the pee when it's food banks

Seriously saw a programme the other day where the hugest woman in the world ( so it looked) who wasn't working cos she could barely walk 5 feet, turned her nose up at the food the food bank supplied

Even the Jewish faith says it's more of a sin to refuse food then to starve because of dietary considerations

Seriously, if I was hungry enough to need a food bank, I'd even eat pease pudding

I suppose it depends on how serious your religious convictions really are. If you can 'bend' them once or when it suits, why have them at all? For example, would I ever consider eating black pudding? :rotfl:(No)

You say that, but I would rather die than eat meat. Most people will survive and possibly even benefit from a few days without food anyway.

OP - when I was vegan, processed food was off the menu as there was so much hidden milk powder in everything, including some bread products. Sainsbury's Oaties (own brand Hobnobs) were an exception. Otherwise it was f&v, soups and curries all the way, probably the one time on my life that I have cooked the most!

I guess whilst the food bank is their benefactor, raw veganism will be the order of the day. They say beggars can't be choosers and this is the proof...

I don't usually comment on political topics, but I find it appalling that statements such as I,d rather die than eat meat a very first world idealism and in very poor taste, when there are people literally starving to death, in what was a very metropolitan city (Aleppo) right at this very moment. And many other areas of the world.

The OP was asking for advice about what to stock to help people in difficult circumstances, with dietary choices but still very much better off that 3/4 of the worlds population.

Let's be grateful that we actually have the luxury of choice.

  • This sounds like a set up for a pun. The answer being "not a sausage!"

In all seriousness I'd suggest some recipes and guidance for how to cook from scratch. We have cookery lessons offered in our village, I imagine a link up with other services could help them learn some skills as to how to cook and some recipe print outs to act as guidance. I've never had to follow a restrictive diet myself so don't have any specific brands to recommend, but the link up of services may be helpful.

    It's a food bank

Emergency rations from tins and packets to tide you over

Our food bank donation box in Tesco is filled daily with processed foods

This it what their distribution centres ask for, long life products

Or should we be donating fresh fruit and veg for that to be dumped?

The programme I referee to she was aghast at being given sardines and pulses to feed her kids saying the only food they ate came from a freezer.

Oh I know , we will all donate frozen carp as well

Sorry. But a food bank is what it is, a help when things are dire, not a freebie supermarket where you get the choice
