It happens at the point of install. Whoever put the sealant in used a licked finger to smooth the surface into the join. This embeds all kinds of grime into the sealant that then forms mould. It is bad practice, and it is not possible to fix. You need to pull it all off and start again.

There are actually tools to smooth the sealant out now as the traditional 'finger' method not only causes mould to grow on the sealant it also cause problems that can lead to infections in plumbers fingers.

My sealant is mouldy, but wasn't smoothed with a wet finger (because it doesn't need smoothing with anything if you use the applicator nozzle the correct way round). The shower curtains are mouldy too, and they weren't smoothed with a wet finger either.

I use neat, thick bleach. Put it on the silicone and spread around, leave it for several hours, clean off then reapply for a second time if necessary.

I soaked a pair of shower curtains in a bucket of bleach for a week once. I started out with blue curtains and black mould, and finished with white curtains and pink mould, then the curtains disintegrated into shreds, because bleach attacks the nylon.

  • I have used THIS for a number of years, then started seeing HG mould cleaner recommended online, so decided to give it a try, apart from HG costing 5x as much I didn't see any difference in effectiveness at shifting the black stuff
  • Cleaners don't work because the mould grows into the sealer, not just on the surface.
  • My mum's silicon is still as pristine as the day the bathroom was installed 15 years ago. But that's because she's got OCD and squeegees the tiles and dries them and the silicon around the bath IMEDIATELY after getting out of the bath/shower.

It's the only way to guarantee no black mould grows. But frankly, life's too ruddy short! :)

Only relaying what I was told by our plumber.

He said he was told this by the manufacturer of the sealant after he complained that the product which claimed to be 'anti-mould' had gone mouldy. He offered to re-do our sealant at no cost using the new spreading tools supplied by the sealant manufacturer.
