Hi guys
We have this black mould/sludge which is on the white sealant that holds the bathroom sink to the wall and the bath sealant too.
We are very clean and we have a spotless bathroom and tiles and we use a ebac for any previous mould/damp and for drying clothes at it is a flat.
I have scrubbed away at this but whatever it is its like its coloured the sealant black, what could I possible use to get rid of this so its clean again?
this is a rented flat we currently rent.
thanks

it never comes off sealant, you have to remove and re seal. Is there a fan in the bathroom that gets used? is it actually vented out (seen 3 recently that were pretend fans, 1 into loft space, 1 into cavity and 1 just solid behind it)Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

There are actually tools to smooth the sealant out now as the traditional 'finger' method not only causes mould to grow on the sealant it also cause problems that can lead to infections in plumbers fingers.0 -
Yea we have a bathroom fan that comes on when the light is on then goes off 2 mins after switching light off.
If I peeled this off would the sink fall off? and could I just pick this sealant up from somewhere cheap like the pound shop/home bargains etc? and do you need the gun etc?
thanks0 -
Have you tried Cillit bang black mould remover? I used it on our shower and the black on the sealant went away after a few uses.0

I'm having some success with HG Mould Spray you can buy from Lakeland. It has a really strong smell of bleach. Spray it on and leave for hours (not the 30 mins it says in the instructions) before rinsing off. It may take multiple applications, particularly if the mould is on an upright rather than flat surface (if that makes sense), but keep going, it does work eventually.
ETA, I'd try this as a first resort rather than trying to reseal with sealant. It's an incredibly fiddly, messy job, and very difficult to get a good even surface if you're not experienced, and yes you will need the gun to squeeze the sealant from the tube.Make £2025 in 2025

Yea tried Cillet bang that's what we use on tiles and must agree its fab but doesn't seem to do anything on this, we actually have some Mould spray as last year got a lot of mould due to drying clothes in the flat, that's why we bought ebac and used windows a lot more, so will try some of that mould spray and leave on.0

It happens at the point of install. Whoever put the sealant in used a licked finger to smooth the surface into the join. This embeds all kinds of grime into the sealant that then forms mould. It is bad practice, and it is not possible to fix. You need to pull it all off and start again.
I've heard that before, and I don't believe it for a second. the only reason to avoid licking your finger is to avoid getting silicon in your mouth. Most people use washing up liquid and water.
Good sealant (Dow Cornings, etc) and maintenance make the biggest difference. Ideally the water can't just sit on the sealant after a shower.
7-10 years would be a good run for silicon.0 -
Another fan of HG Mould, it's always worked well for us.0

Having the same problem in our bathroom, despite resealing the shower seal only a few months ago. The time of the year doesn't help to be honest !0

Cillit Bang black mould remover (not the bathroom cleaner) worked for us, and we had tried everything available including HG. The sealant around the windows of a house we had rented out were disgusting, left the Cillit Bang on overnight and they were brilliant next day.
I always said I'd never use Cillit Bang again after the bathroom cleaner turned my grouting pink, but was desperate! The main thing is, it worked. Good luck.0
