  • where you have an account they will normally do it for free. If they don't want to then change a bit at a time. £40 here and there, soon be sorted. You won't be able to pay a fine in £ coins though if that's the plan

That's one way to make sure you've always got a £1 coin for the trolley at Tesco!
  • Is it for business or personal use?
  • I tried changing money at the post office once, and was abruptly told "we're not a bank".....

Wouldn't be surprised if they flagged this up as money laundering (not joking).

I took an old-style £2 coin into my bank and they said, 'Take it to the Post Office, they'll change it'. And they did, without question.

Opposite to my experience yesterday at a P.O., after using my debit card to pay for stamps and a Special Delivery package, I was asked if I wanted cash too from the card.
I wish I had now, because visiting my bank's cash machine nearby revealed that it was out of action.:o

We care for two people with learning difficulties under the "Shared Lives" Scheme. Each of them is allowed exactly £8.00 daily for their dinner/lunch due to budgeting constraints. We are sick of coppering up trying to find £1 coins. They cannot manage debit cards and stick to their budget.

We are responsible for their finances and are scrutinised by the local authority if we allow them to overspend.

I think trying a bank has a better chance of success. I have often asked for change as a customer and not an eyelid has been batted.
