Regarding childcare: No, I won't do it. Not on your nelly. Not under any circumstances, unless it was literally a life and death situation.
I will look after any animal you care to put my way - hell, I've looked after dogs, cats, horses, snakes, phasmids (stick/leaf insects), lizards, scorpions and big 'airy spiders, but children I absolutely draw the line at.
I chose not to have any children of my own, because I don't have even a smidge of maternal instinct, and I feel that being asked to look after anyone else's would be unfair to both me and the child(ren) in question.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

We live too far away for anything other than an emergency, when / if grandchildren appear. DDiL's parents have said the same - emergency only. My mum worked until she was 65, when DSs were 9 & 7 so couldn't do childcare, but my ex-in-laws looked after them while I worked when ex was at Uni.

  • Believe it or not, I'm the same re childcare, I'm happy to do the odd babysit, and I love to have the children visit on my terms, but I would refuse to do full time childcare apart from times of illness.
I am also a strict nana, I will not tolerate bad behaviour and the DGC's know it.

Csarina, I can multitask that way, I sneeze I wet myself!

Caterina, we had someone like that at the WI I belonged to, as our chairman remarked one day 'there is always bloody one and it's always bloody her!'

    Hugs Hester

  • I am a hands on Granny :) and probably because I worked full time when my own children were growing up I have actually enjoyed seeing my seven DGC all growing up, and looking after them

Now I have just three boys to look after, and that is after school before Mum or Dad appear. They cause me very few problems as at 12, 15 & 16 they are virtually off hand.I am there and make sure they have a snack and I prep the veg for their evening meal. The boys are pretty good and mainly its supervising their homework, and organising lifts here and there over the years I have done the Doctors, Dentists, school runs and seen all of them in Nativity, and school shows, run them to various football matches and stood and cheered in the freezing cold and mopped fevered brows when they were poorly.
Listened to their homework projects and tested them on all of their possible exam questions . I probably know more than I should about the reproductive lifestyle of the human race :) as at various stages the boys have to be tested at school for biology.

The boys tell me their problems, and its from their mouth to my ear, and never goes any further unless they want it to.
I have taught them at various times to tie their shoe laces, ties, and how to make a decent cup of tea ( a most important function to keep Granny happy :))They all are good at playing cards, draughts & chess.

They can all cook without burning themselves and also know how to load a dishwasher and hang clothes on the washing line .If I can do it ,then so can they :)

In return I have umpteen cuddles and as much love and affection as I possible want :) I insist on politeness ,courtesy and truthfulness, we all get along fine .

I adore them all and still lead a pretty busy life which is interspersed with bits of their lives as well.

We play cricket in the summer (I had two older brothers and can still bowl a mean slow off spin :)) they help me forage for blackberries and I help them find conkers :)

Not every ones cup of tea but it suits me and I think the boys enjoy themselves and they know there is always someone around for them no matter what

    Afternoon all,

Cool enough here today, but sun is shining so its a very pleasant day.

Had porridge with a banana, honey and milk for breakfast, should have porridge more often, but dont find that it 'stays' with me for long, in spite of what people say.

Chicken stirfry this evening for dinner.....might put a few prawns with it as I saw in a recipe on tv earlier....dont have any broccoli but do have some fresh spinach which would be good I think, served with noodles.

Hugs to Coxy, Lainey and Hilstep and anyone who could do with one.

  • Regarding looking after grandchildren, I also made it clear to my family that I was not prepared to do 9-5, 5 days a week childminding. (I would if they were in dire circumstances though)

Babysitting, collecting from school/nursery, taking them out for the day, having them to stay for a night or two, that's fine, but I did not retire in order to look after children every day. I've done all that with my own three, but I was young then!

Having said that, we have 2 grandchildren in this country, and try to see them as much as we can, just don't want to do it all the time.

Sun going down here and I'm almost ready for bed!

Busy morning, travelling most of the afternoon and now just relaxing.

    I've made 40 of these:

    Puddini.jpg

They are so messy, I can't deal with white chocolate well, it doesn't stay melted very long. Think I'll use icing next time.

Taking the woman to visit her husband is good but it's a long way. Luckily I'm not asked too often because of the distance but I'm happy to do it.

I can hear my grape juice calling me....:rotfl:

Gers, they look lovely, are they chocolate?

Congrats to RRs DD, and on her birthday too! Sorry to hear of the little dog's passing.

I've had to clean all the surfaces this evening, lots of brick dust everywhere, hopefully that's the messiest part done. The kitchen door is boarded over so I'll have to go around the back if I need to get anything from the conservatory.

Hi all thank you for your sympathetic comments re working with children, in the end it was ok, if a bit tiring, and LOL Elona I wasn't in a horse or even half, I had a hand up a horse puppet, hidden by a screen, a bit like a Punch and Judy show, it was meant to be the side of a stable, the kids sat on straw bales and there was baby Jesus in a basket too. It was rather fun in a way. The other "animals", a sheep played by an old friend of mine and donkey plus cow played by a young man, were nice and fun to chat with. The kids were well behaved and in the end I was not sorry to have given my day to a lovely event. It's just the way I was pushed into it that was grating.

I had refused to take on another part and was very glad to have done so, having seen it played, because it was much more interactive and I would have had to learn lines.

Regarding babysitting, I don't mind too much doing a bit of paid babysitting work, or help my neighbours on emergencies (they usually feed my cat when I am away) but I really don't want to do much more childcare. I will finish this academic year with the current family then I will see. It is a lovely family and I would hate to let them down.

I am far away from being a granny and don't know how I would feel with my own grandchildren, but definitely not full time, no way!

Ah well, its not going to happen anytime soon I hope, DD was (maybe still is) in a relationship with a very undesirable man, and DS is not in a relationship. Neither of them is anywhere near settled enough to have a baby responsibly.

    Good night.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Thanks, and no. They are Christmas pudding, melted chocolate, golden syrup and sherry. Very messy to make. Then the white chocolate on top with bits of red and green glac! cherry. Nigella's puddini bonbons! Well, sort of.

Kitchen nightmare then? It'll soon be over and looking fabulous as long as that woodworm is sorted.
