Generally signs of 0.5m2 or larger require advertising consent in the UK. Not having said consent is a criminal offence.
Anything bigger than 0.3m2 and not illuminated or any size sign if it's illuminated requires planning permission for my local council, I thought that was standard?0 -
A shame the council can't be bothered punishing Parking Pie for the income generated from not having planning permission/advertising consent.
But I bet if you as a private citizen breached the rules in any small way they will come down on you like a ton of bricks0 -
It's local councillors who should have their tails pulled so they can rattle the officials' cages. I'm sure they'd be interested if one of their constituents had been penalised as a result of this refusal of officials to do what they should know is right.Ex turpi causa non oritur actio
Are officials not acting illegally by turning a blind eye to this? Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Theres two things in play here, Planning permission for the signs and Adversing consent for the contents of the sign.
the planning is permission is a minor civil affair, where permission can be granted retrospectively, where as far as i know the Advertising is a criminal offence and permission must be granted firstFrom the Plain Language Commission:
