With the price of 40/43" 4K so cheap at the moment, there's nothing to lose in buying one. I picked one up for £320 at the Weekend and installed it at my Sisters.
It's just used for viewing in the lounge and was a better price than the HD sets that were in the shop and has a better upscaled picture from any source.
They are now looking for a larger one for the TV room.

well, based on reviews etc I bought one like this http://ao.com/product/lc43cfe6131k-sharp-tv-tv-black-37485-108.aspx?&WT.z_PT=AV&WT.z_AT=LED%20TV&WT.z_MT=Search&WT.z_RTM=PLA&WT.z_MAT=Sharp%20TV&WT.z_DT=c&WT.z_FT=Free%20Standing&WT.z_PC=LC-43CFE6131K&WT.srch=1&wt.z_cn=AV%20-%20LED%20TVs%20-%20SKU&wt.z_ag=product%20code&wt.z_kw=lc-43cfe6131k&gclid=Cj0KEQiA6_TBBRDInaPjhcelt5oBEiQApPeTF1_gSiaAETjVSNboUMNVT6PjFD40yGpSXMCEUn4ViAoaAitK8P8HAQ

Mostly as its HD and has HD freeview channels, they will mostly be using it for freeiew. Based from what I read, they are unlikely to get much/if any use out of a 4k one at the moment, though I guess this could change in a year or 2.

Hopefully I made a decent purchase.

That's a supermarket "cheapie" I'm afraid, but should be adequate for your needs. Don't expect it to last much longer than the guarantee period, however.

You should have gone to John Lewis or Richer Sounds and spent a little more on a well known brand.

Typical, im abit out of touch with technology now days myself :D

Last samsung 55inch they bought lasted a year and stopped working, that didnt persuade me to go back to samsung.

To be honest if its lasts a couple of years, then needs replacing I'll porbably look at something better then, when the 4k is hopefully getting more content, unles ofcourse this is completely crap and ill cancel the order, as I havent collected it, only ordered it.

Richer Sounds have some nice UHD Tvs possibly still in the sale .
If i can buy a UHD tv at around the price of a HD tv then that is what i would do . Even though their is little content and i would need BT infinity 2 for BT TV UHD .

She'll doubtless have been watching a 4K demo reel in the shop!

At home, she'll currently need to be a have a PayTV subscription to view any 4K broadcasts, or she'll have to fork out for an Ultra HD player and discs.

Having said all that, a new 4K set will still make the most of the normal Standard Definition and High Definition available on Freeview...

Gotta just pull up the bolded section for a second. Any form of upscaled image is gonna look worse than if it was displayed on a display that corresponds to the source resolution.

Some displays upscale better than others but a native image is always preferable. That's why if your Mum has no 4k content to put through a 4k TV you may be better off making a cost saving and buying a 1080p Full HD set.

Again, take into account future proofing, viewing distances and all the other factors but from everything you describe 4k sounds a bit of overkill for your Mum's needs.

    Thanks for the info

I've pretty much decided apparently she liked a full HD samsung in the shop she thought was 4k, turns it it was just full HD anyway

I'm bit reluctant to buy a Samsung as one they bought once before lasted a year before it broke but that could happen anyway.

So if anyone happens to know of a decent 40inch samsung in full HD that would be great. Tried to buy in curry's but that place s a nightmare to deal with. JVC and Hisense seem cheaper but don't know if they are as good quality/longevity wise or not
