This is exactly it, there is no supplier or existence of MPRN. The number you call that's set up to specifically tell you the number and supplier puts you through to a person in the end and their advice is call a supplier. I've been very specific when talking to suppliers too saying I believe it is, "shipperless" only to be passed on to a couple of departments who then suggest other suppliers or national grid again.

As others suggest simply store the money away and keep the correspondence.

One day someone somewhere will ask and as long as you show you did your part nothing further will be done other than you being able to "change" suppliers.

Hi. As far as I can remember when we contacted British Gas we initially spoke to the new customer department and explained the situation, and it went on from there. Checks were made again with the national grid etc, but eventually we got a new MPRN number and started paying. It did take some persistence - which is surprising considering that it doesn't seem to be that uncommon a problem.

There was never any question of paying for gas already used, as as you have found, the position was that we didn't have a gas supply!

Hope you get it sorted. :)

Our gas meter does not seem to exist on anybodies database!

When we bought the house we were told that British Gas were the suppliers for both Gas and Electricity. (inside the gas meter box there is also a sticker saying the gas transporter is British Gas)

We have contacted BG and they have no record of gas supply and don't recognise the meter number. After ringing around the houses, BG, Transco then said that the supplier was Scottish Power. Scottish Power also denied any knowledge of the property or meter. Basically the gas meter is not on the national database and nobody acknowledges it's existence!

So in another attempt to get this sorted my wife has called Wales and West (who supposedly supply the area)... They have said address is not owned by them and the pipes were supplied by a small independent company called ESP.. On calling ESP they say it should be Scottish Power.... Scottish Power deny this once again!! What do we do? We are not receiving any gas bills at the moment, shouldn't really complain but don't want to get stung by a backdated bill!
Your gas meter does nt exist but neither does Transco since 2005 when they were bought out by National Grid. Spiro has given you the correct answer. You must contact a supplier asap

Yeah, the Meter point admin number from the link in the last post couldn't help either I had tried it a few times before after being referred to it there is just no number. National grid said only after finding a supplier to take you on this would be issued or a new number created. Thanks, Mama4321 for your reply too. I can now safely say this has been resolved! After contacting a bunch of suppliers and being told to go elsewhere I contacted Eon again and miraculously found someone who understood the word, "shipperless"! 10 to 15mins on the phone and an account was set up! I say I tried Eon again as like the others they had passed on me too in the past! It just seems to depend on who answers the phone or if they've had experience of this before.

Hello 88888 and glad we're sorting this out for you, albeit at the second attempt.

We've a Shipperless Site Team who look after situations where there's a connected gas meter that isn't registered on the network and there's no appointed supplier. They'll create a Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) and set up an account.

The MPRN is a unique registration number given to residential and small business gas customers. Our Shipperless Team will also make sure the relevant national database is advised of the full details. This will help if you decide to change supplier down the line.

Sorry we didn't put you through to this team at the first attempt 88888.

we had this for years - united utilities supplied to 7 out of 8 flats in the block and denied we existed. Had saved up the money to pay whoever - eventually got them to recognise us when we were moving out and needed to give details to the solicitor
  • Hello,

I seems to be having the very similar issue and had been trying to get in touch with various suppliers with no luck, is there a contact number or someone from EON or any other supplier, who can help me generate a new MPRN number on my property.

    Regards

Hello Customer1984 and welcome to the Forums.

As above, we've a Shipperless Site Team who look after situations where there's a connected gas meter that isn't registered on the network and there's no appointed supplier. They'll create a Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) and set up an account.

MSE don't like company reps putting contact details on the open Forum. Please phone the general number on our website and ask to be put through to this team. They're available from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and between 8am and 6pm Saturdays. Alternatively, drop an email to the address in my Profile and I'll be happy to let you have their contact details.

When talking to this team it'll help speed things up if you're able to let them have the gas meter serial number, up to date meter readings, the full Royal Mail postal address and, if a new build, any plot details.

    Hope this helps Customer1984.
