    - Cancelling your direct debit may complicate things as you'll need it for the new supplier, but this is unconfirmed.

Really not sure about that bit of advice Imogen. A new supplier would need a new DD, if that's how you choose to pay them. Not cancelling the DD risks being further in credit to GB, and the possibility of not getting it back

No risk in cancelling the DD imo. If you end up owing GB you can always pay in coppers down the Post Office (that's if they ever collect) and if they ever bill you. You can pay the new supplier however you like, if its a standard tariff there's unlikely to be a discount for DD . Most will be switching straight away anyway if they've got any sense, so not worth setting a DD up.

Be good if MSE pushed GB into letting customers have access to their account/balances/bills. You'd think they are trying to hide something.

There is no guarantee that people can have credit balances with GB energy repaid to them. In fact I believe that this will almost certainly not happen.

Yes, I completely agree with you. The direct debit is an agreement between the customer and GBEnergy only. A new agreed direct debit would be required with any new supplier.

I was in credit by a small amount with gbe at the beginning of the month and I'm happy to settle my account with them in due course, but there is no way I'm going to leave my DD in place and let them take more money than I owe, as it will probably prove a real nightmare to get any overpayment returned.

I thought it was unlawful to trade whilst being insolvent anyway?

I have chosen to go against the MSE advice on this occasion, as it makes no sense to allow a company that has ceased trading to take money from my account.

Any company or organisation involved only has to contact me and I will settle my bill in full, but that's as far as I'm prepared to go.

Once I'm switched to LOLR, then I will be switching immediately to the best available offer via the energy club.

They certainly won't take anymore if you cancel your DD. Best way to make sure ;)

Thanks for the reply - I know vat is usually added explicitly on bills, but I just wondered if the 'Fixed 12 Crystal' rate of 9.8700p/kWh (from my welcome pack) includes it or not - It doesn't say...

If anyone is able to compare their rate from their welcome pack with a bill, to see if it includes vat or not I'd appreciate it.

If it doesn't get answered I will check for you when I get home as I downloaded all the bills and can tell you then :)
  • Yes the rate of 9.87p is inclusive of vat @ 5%

This is exactly my opinion. I am also in credit with GB and have cancelled my DD. I will now wait until switched to a new supplier and will then research the best deals.
  • I am in the same position as several others. I started with GB Energy (electricity only) wef 21/10/2016. I paid my first d/d of £29 on 21/10, followed by a 2nd d/d on 21/11. I took a meter reading yesterday morning.

GB Energy have not asked for a meter reading since 21/10. However I have supplied several more, the last being on 20/11. Gb Energy have not contacted me at all or provided any PDF bill.

This morning I cancelled the d/d with my bank. I have calculated the outstanding cost from 21/10/2016 (on a spread sheet) until 27/11 (at yesterday morning) & it's £43.85 vat incl. I have paid £59 to GB over 2 payments.

This afternoon I signed up for a switch with People & Places on their fixed deal to 31 October 2018. I have received my welcome letter & will start with them on 19/12, paying my 1st d/d on 20/12. I may end up owing the deemed supplier a few pounds but the cost should be minimal.

Hopefully I can now forget I was ever with GB Energy for less than 6 weeks.
