German measles

Hi, I am currently 6 weeks pregnant. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I found out this morning that I may have come into contact with german measles.

I am pretty sure I had my rubella jab at school but does anyone know if I would have been tested for immunity during the routine checks of my other pregnancies?

Thanks for any help. Just one more thing to worry about!

I think you get tested routinely for immunity when you are pregnant. I had a similar thing when I was pregnant with my third: thought i may have had contact with someone with german measles. My doctor looked into it and noted my previous immunity.

This may well be the case with you, but I'd perhaps give your midwife a call and just ask her advice. She might suggest a blood test just to check.

Good luck. I'm sure things will be fine but if you've any concerns the midwife will be able to put your mind at rest.

    Hi

Just to put your mind at rest, I sat next to a child with GM at the GP surgery at 6 weeks into 2nd pregnancy, was well breathed/dribbled on before anything was said!

I was given a blood test, all was fine (I had vaccination as child too) and I'm just off now to collect the strapping 6 foot ( and no doubt starving) result from footy! :D

Good luck, and don't worry - it's very highly unlikely that you have no immunity.

ps I think they only tested me coz I sounded off at GP about kids with GM being in his waiting area!

When My Daughter Had A Very Conspicuous Rash A Few Months Ago, I Too Thought It Was German Measles But When I Took Her To Our Local Nhs Centre They Said If It Was Then Thats The Nice Strain To Have, Its The Measles On Its Own Thats The Nasty One And Does The Most Harm

Erm, when you are pregnant German Measles can really harm an unborn child, which is why immunity for it for women is important. I don't think any of the "childhood" ilnesses are particularly nice for pregnant women to have; rubella is a particular worry as it can cause damage to a high percentage of foetuses and, if you are not immune, a termination could be advised.

Hello - as a MW I can say that you will, at booking, have screening to check your immunity to rubella via the bloods that we do routinely. This is done in each pregnancy. Have you been to book yet? If not, contact yr surgery so that the bloods can be done at least.

Just re-read yr post - yes , you would have been tested for rubella in yr previous pregnancies - there should be copies of this test at yr surgery, and if you have a 'co-op card' from your previous pregnancy ( a lot of people keep them ), then the results will (Should!), be entered in there. However, you must note, that in some cases immunity has been known to reduce, and so it's not a case of once immune, always immune necessarily. Make contact with your MW, discuss everything, she can then take appropriate action for any bloods that need doing, giving you the reassurance that you need.
