I'm driving from Newcastle to Glasgow King Street next week. Anyone done it before, what's the traffic like?

Which way you going. Works going on right now on M74 and M8/A8 so either way you will hit traffic. M8/A8 is less traffic and less disruption.
Once your in Glasgow you have 2 choices again either M8 or M74.
M8 is always busy during weekday M74 moves faster but a bit more fiddly to get to you destination.0 -
Not sure which way yet, probably the easiest.0

Getting to Hamilton's the easy part, after that, M8 and M74 both have average speed cameras and a 50 mph limit.
AA route recommends the M74.0 -
Personally I'd do the A696/A68 to St Boswells, A699 to Selkirk then A707/A72 to Peebles, A72/721 to Carluke and lastly the A73 till it meets the A8/M8 into Glasgow itself. Which should be a pleasant country drive most of the way with a pretty awful end.0

Stay on the 74 and exit 1A Polmadie, then pick up the A730 New Rutherglen Road. When you leave the 74 at Polmadie you will be @ King St in 10/15 mins depending on traffic.
Try and avoid J6 (Motherwell/ Hamilton) at around peak times as the tail backs can be significant and there is no effective way to avoid. Maryville interchange is around 5 miles South, from there you have the option to remain on the 74 or leave via 73 and join with the M8, I'd advise remaining on the 74.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Unless you need the car or have one or more passengers I would consider he train.

You just don't want nor need to go anywhere near M74/M73/M8 area with all the road works get to Edinburgh and the stick on the M8. Either follow pogofish route or stick to the A1. Whichever route you choose up the east coast watch out for speed cameras.0

Or A696 to A68 then on to A720 to M8 and off at J150
