HDMI lead - signal drop off

Options
I had a 10m VGA cable connecting a computer to my old TV which worked fine.
I've replaced the TV and I'm now using a 10m HDMI cable. The problem is I'm getting video but no audio on the TV and my computer puts up messages saying it is reducing the video quality due to network load.

Simple question, is it the length of the HDMI cable that is the problem?

Note. The computer is also connected to a monitor but turning the monitor off does not help.

There's no upper limit on the length of a HDMI cable but as a general rule a decent cable may begin to drop off at 15m.

Older cables may crap out at about 5m if they're not at least HDMI v1.3 capable.

Can you temporarily move the PC & TV closer together and try a different HDMI cable?
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

HDMI has always been able to carry sound. The clue might be in what HDMI stands for - High Definition Multimedia Interface. :) Later revisions can carry more channels (5.1 surround sound for example) and mix them together but on a basic level they all carry sound.

It's far more likely the computer isn't set to play sound over HDMI, preferring instead to use the traditional 3.5mm connection that we've had forever and a day - they should auto switch but sometimes they don't, depends on the hardware in the computer, what Windows wants to do and whether the wind's blowing in the right direction :)

That wouldn't explain why the computer is reducing the video quality though and I suspect that is either a cable or a port issue.

I think its nothing to do with the cable, they are probably streaming something and its due to internet bandwidth.

I know HDMI does have the ability to reduce the quality but it only really applies to 4K high colour. The HDMI spec says it has to be able to deliver 1080p at a bare minimum.

OK thanks. It sounds like the sound setup. I'll try it later. Its a new decent speck HDMI cable. I'm using HDMI socket 3 on the TV so I'll swap some cables around and see what happens.

I can't see how to change the sound output. In control panel - sound I find 3 devices listed that all say unplugged. As the HDMI lead is plugged into the graphics card I looked at various display options but can't see a sound option.

Anyone know how I change the sound output option?

I just tried to reinstall the AMD video drivers and I've now got no desktop. Every program I open gets an icon on the taskbar but doesn't do anything.

    Getting stressed now

Reduced quality due to network load, sounds like a bandwidth issue for your computer and storage device.

Streaming over the internet or from a NAS box?

I think thats your problem not the cable. I have a 15M cable and no issues between PC and TV.

I swapped the sound from HDMI/TV to PC rear panel output and then swapped it back and had no sound.
After some head scratching why HDMI was not in the sound list, it clicked its hidden.. Show hidden sound devices and there is was HDMI output. click and sound on the TV again.
