Had my car smashed into today on my road, smashed my back lights(repairable) and caved in the side panel by the petrol cap, (can't replace) quite twisted so not sure how much panel beater can do. i had warned my labour councillors that this road was being used as a rat run, that something like this would happen, someone soon will be seriously hurt, basically said they had no money to do anything. I am on low income and gutted that i will lose lots, and on resale, while the perp gets away. I don't want to lose NCB, and going to the police to report it means my specialist insurer gets to hear of it, fuming.

BUT, I have reported it to the police, not sure why, maybe stress, they can't do anything, but I did the right thing, but now, I will probably have to inform my specialist disability insurer(not many in Uk) and next year my premium will rocket. does anyone know what sort of things happen, re ins now it is on record, crime number, etc..

Well there is no crime number for this offence and the police do not share the information with the insurance companies.

You can therefore make your own informed decision whether to claim or fix it yourself and breach the terms of your policy. Only you can decide that.

I would guess you are hinting at Motorbility in which case I would guess it is a lease car. Your problem will be returning the car at the end of the lease period as it must be in reasonable condition i.e. not accident damaged. If it is a lease car better report it to insurers and let them repair it.
  • Hi, tx, no, it is my own car, my carer drives it under any driver ins, there is now a crime number, why did i do it!

There's no crime number calm down.
  • the police 101 operator gave me one, they even had details of when i last had a hit and run, even though i didn't go through with the report, i have had three in 18 months and i am financially struggling, tx.

They gave you an incident or a crash number not a crime number. Fail to stop and fail to report is not a recordable crime. They don't share that information with the insurance companies.

"You have the right to contact the police and be kept informed about the investigation if you’ve been the victim of a crime.

You must be given a crime reference number and contact details for the police officer dealing with your case when you report the crime."

    according to https://www.gov.uk/your-rights-after-crime

Failure to stop is a crime, recordable or not.

You do realise that only recordable crimes are given a crime number?
  • The incident was a hit and run on my parked care.

Do you mean the government website is wrong?

I shall have to sit down.

Anyway, are you suggesting that the person answering the 101 call is qualified to know the difference?
