It might explain it. That article says that lower impedance phones will be louder. Though actually with the things you describe in your previous post, it might also involve a dodgy connection in the line somewhere as someone suggested earlier.

It sounds perfectly fine through the old headphones. I just checked online and they are 24ohms.

I have noticed that pricey headphones have higher ohm levels. 1 pair on sonys site are £1700. You would be extremely annoyed if you bought them and they did not work with your tv.

My Sony headphones have an extra conductor ring section on the plug tip - 4 sections instead of 3.
I presume the extra one is for the microphone on the Sony headphones and this causes problems with devices with no mic input through the headphone jack.
They normally work if I just pull the plug out of the socket ever so slightly to align the contacts.

Do you mean to do with the function designed to work with phones that allows you to take calls.
All in ear phones tend to have this it seems.

... but your TV isn't designed to take calls!

Compare the plug ends - for example...

... a quick google suggests the Sennheisers only have 3.
    So no microphone perhaps?

How many contacts do the old headphones have? (The ones that work okay connected to the TV?)

Yeh that's what had me confused. Apparently they are designed to work with specialist hi-fi amplifiers.

By the way I wasn't being sarcastic in previous post -- the spacebar on the laptop stopped working :)
