Any way to escape or change a newly agreed Virgin Media contract?

Hi, I'm writing on behalf of my girlfriend. She has had a contract with Virgin Media for one year.
She renegotiated the contract about 17 days ago, and got the amount she paid down from £40 or so to £36.

Six days ago she decided to move house, in January, but Virgin Media don't supply cable to the property she is moving to (a rural location)

Because she is a few days over the cooling off period for canceling the contract, they are charging her £240 to exit the contract (or pay for the year, which would be £360)

Is there any way to avoid this?

Virgin media claim they sent out the new contract, but she didn't receive it. She would be happy to have a different broadband service with Virgin at the new property, but they only supply cable apparently. I thought I'd ask advice, as it's a lot of money to lose. Thankyou

Agreeing to a new contract over the phone is as good as a signature.

She signed up, and now is breaking that contract. It has to be paid.

Why did she sign up if she was planning a house move? It's not usually something done on a whim.
  • Thanks for your help- I suspected as much, but it seems terribly unfair- a huge penalty for a small mistake. I think she did move on a whim- she has always wanted to live in the Yorkshire Dales, and an ideal place came up just by chance.

Look on it as part of the cost of moving.
