I did it. i actually did it.

I did tell him how much, and he wanted to know. We wrote it all down and it's circa £21,000. I thought he would just be gobsmacked but he said OK, let's get on with it then. Write up your plan and I'll help you look over it.

I had envisioned a night of turmoil and tears and anger, but it's all turned out quite alright.

    Well done!!! :T

See - I thought your situation was similar to mine and the outcome has been as well. It's not about controlling you or your finances, if he understands your situation he can help - if he was still blissfully unaware, then his ignorance could have made things worse.
  • Have you got any of that 21k on 0% cards by the way? That can really help with clearing it.

Only £1500 or so at the moment :( I originally had a lot more but I was late with a payment, so lost the interest rate. Learnt my lesson and now I have it set up on DD.

  • I was in a similar situation to you and it felt like such a massive weight off my shoulders when I finally came clean.

I'm lucky that my boyfriend is a tight fisted Yorkshireman with no debt who is completely supportive and encouraging. He actually suggested a couple of good ideas which has helped me free up some extra money each month and take some of the pressure off.

I'm so glad this has ended well for you and from the sounds of it you will have this debt knocked out in no time!

That's so cool well done! I couldn't have done it. The bonus is you now know how he handles unexpected bad news and he had shown himself to be very supportive which looks good for your future.
  • I am really pleased to say I have just paid off £799, an entire balance of a small card, on top of the minimums this month. It was my second highest interest rate but also my smallest card. Having it gone completely means one less card to keep track of. Very pleased. I've written up and printed off the letter already for closing the account, just need to post it at lunch.

Keeping transparency with my partner I have a spreadsheet we can both access. He hasn't been at all moody or anything about what I spend, but I think he just wants to see a commitment that I'm paying off. It's brought my debt sub-20k :)
  • Well done milobrulee :) sat here smiling for you!

  • Congratulations Milo - that's brilliant work! The spreadsheet is a great idea too - sometimes being accountable to someone else is a great motivator.

On this point, can anybody suggest if it's best to close unused accounts completely or to keep cards with a zero balance open?

I have 4 cards with various limits, 2 of which have balances and 2 which have none.

The cards are purely for flexibility with 0% transfers.
