    Smart meters only benefit the companies through savings in meter-reader men.

    For consumers the're a gimmic. If you want to reduce your electricty costs, turn off the lights when not in the room, and use the electric fire for shorter periods. You don't need a smart meter to tell you this!
    I can see exactly how much I am using per hour, check what each appliance is using and how much leccy I am using per day, per week etc.
    I fail to see how this benefits you, especially if " not the best rate"!

    As for the DD - call the supplier and ask them to
    * refund the excess you've paid for your usage and
    * reduce your DD
