Or you could turn off all your electric for a week, hide in the cupboard and wait for them :D
But that could be classed as entrapment which is murky legally. :rotfl:

On a side note, my parents house was burgled while they slept upstairs, so criminals are not likely to be interested in whether somebody has a smart meter or not.

Clearly, the only answer is to stay at home 24/7!
Which allows ample time to fashion a suitable foil head adornment.
  • what is the best tinfoil to use?

Bacofoil is quite good - don't use a colander though - they are full of holes and all the rays will get through the little holes.

My suggestion would be a galvanised bucket on your head but don't forget your nether regions as well - line your underpants with foi, using two layers if possible, justl to be on the safe side

I don't want to worry the OP but as it is looking increasingly likely that the Govt will find a clever way of 'insisting' that we all get smart meters, the National Grid also needs 30 minute usage data to manage peak energy demands. Clearly, the only answer is to stay at home 24/7!

Where do you get that from?

You do all realise that the data will never be collected holf hourly right? It is loggedf half hourly but will be either collected monthly or daily.

This menas there is no instant access to information and negatesd most of your concerns. Yes patterns could be established form the data but there are far easier wasy to do that.
  • Don't forget that not having a car parked on your drive can also be a dead giveaway...

Or your curtains not being opened in the morning..

I would have though that just going to work everyday would give most undesirables around 10 hours of uninterrupted access five days a week without all the bother of trying to analyse my leccy meter and then trying to work out which house it related to.

Fair enough, the whole thing could be over-egged, but - this scenario and many of the others offered (many in a mocking way) requires local knowledge and is maybe an issue when it come to the opportunist thief. Having a detailed analysis of your house occupancy available in a database takes the whole thing to a different level. Think data protection, hacking and all the rest of it. One thing is for sure; your property will not be made any safer by 30 minutes logging of your energy usage.

I think this is not correct. They will, if given the opportunity, collect it half-hourly.
