URGENT: broken down vehicle

Been asked to help a friend out who is currently broken down with no cover so would like to know which company is cheapest to call for roadside assistance and/or relay to join on the spot. Thanks

Don't most companies now impose a minimum 24hr delay before a new member can call-out?

I thought non-members could join at the roadside for an extra fee?

Broken Down but Not an RAC Member?
Don't worry - we can help even if you're not an RAC Member yet.
1. Call 0800 197 7815**
2. Tell us where you are
3. We'll help if you've broken down or your vehicle won't start
4. Join RAC for the year - prices will differ from those online and we'll add an emergency callout charge
5. You can choose your breakdown package but for the first 24 hours you'll be on Roadside assistance only

By the roadside?

If you are stuck by the side of the road with no way home then unfortunately your options are much more limited.
If you have broken down without cover you can compare providers offering instant cover or call the numbers below to pay for a breakdown service to come out to your vehicle.
• AA: 0800 88 77 66
• RAC: 0800 197 7815
• Green Flag: 0845 246 1557
You will usually have to pay a call out charge and the full price of 12 months cover but this is still likely to be cheaper than paying a garage to collect your car.

AA Charge about £50 to join/upgrade at the roadside, but have no issues coming out.

You might be better phoning garages local to the breakdown.

For a "money" website, that is pretty poor advice.

Yes, I'd already seen that site hence coming here to ask as they're absolutely no use whatsoever!

I was hoping someone might have personal insight or advice to offer to save me ringing round each individual company and have them trying to bamboozle into joining lol

I've managed to get hold of a mobile mechanic who's going out to help them this afternoon, and for a very reasonable fee. Much cheaper than the breakdown guys!

Did they give a fixed quote, if so how much? It would be nice for other people coming from google with similar problem to know what sort of prices they might want to look for.

Yes, their callout fee is £50 but waived if it can be fixed on the spot so only parts & labour charged.

I know Green Flag wanted £108 just to send someone out and would only tow to local garage if it can't be fixed at roadside.

I didn't bother calling AA or RAC but I believe they're considerably more expensive.
