Have you thought that your applying for a job in a bank. They will know how long to store bank details for so you can't wiggle your way out of that one. Tell the truth now before they find out later. If they find out when your working there they will question your honesty in other respects

I worked in Employee Relations in the banking sector and we used to dismiss people pretty consistently for dishonesty, as Sangie says honesty is probably the most important part of the job.

You can claim you made an error to Hireright, and concoct a story and if they accept it then HSBC probably won't check, but if they find out then especially during your probation I'd very surprised if they didn't give you your week's notice (if you're lucky). After that they still could view it as gross misconduct and dismiss you without notice.

Up to you what you do from here, but I'd take this as a learning experience.

It wasn't a stupid error. It was a lie. You have already confirmed that it was a lie, so stop acting like it was an error. And why, exactly, is lying about something five years ago make it a better lie than if it was last week? If you didn't think they would care about five year old employment, why on earth did you lie about it in the first place?

I have to admit that perplexed as I am by why you lied about this, I am more concerned about your attitude to it. You are blaming the bank for their "stupid" security clearances, and describing it all as a silly mistake instead of what it actually is. And you are going out of your way to try to dig yourself out of it by telling more lies. It has maybe escaped your attention, but banks customers would like honest bank staff dealing with their accounts.

What happened was, when I made my new cv i just copied over the dates from my old CV... and i forgot to change it

I don't know why I didn't remember to change it , as it wouldn't make a difference to them employing me + i have 2 more employers on my CV after that

and im not blaming the bank for this, i just thought it was odd for an employer to check an employment period over 5 years ago

    Thank You for the reply!

Would you recommend telling the HR manager at HSBC before I tell HireRight? Or should I just inform HireRight?

It was an stupid thing for me to do tbh, as i've had 2 more job since then which have more relevant experience

So you lied on your old cv? Well that's alright then, as long as you lied consistently!

OP, I hope you get it sorted out. People 'embellish' their CVs all the time, as we all know. It's a bit of a quandary you're in. Quite why they want to know about employment in a shop over five years ago, which has now closed, is anyone's bet; I'm guessing it's a textbook example of box-ticking.

But the irony of this case is hilarious! Here we have HSBC, Your Criminal Bank, expecting all their staff to as honest as the day's long - recklessly honest, was a phase I think Boris Johnson used - and yet HSBC the company are thieving, money laundering criminals the like of which the world has not seen before. Proved. You couldn't make it up!

So two wrongs make a right then?

Nixon tried a third but that didn't end well!

Manny - as you can see you've come to the wrong place for the help and advice you need. All you'll get here is a load of finger wagging from a gaggle of sanctimonious trolls.

Good luck to you. We all get things wrong from time-to-time, except the contributors here, of course.

    Thank You !!!

If you don't mind... could I get your honest opinion of what you would do in this situation ?
