Hi... so i passed my HSBC interview and now they are conducting a background check via a company called Hire Right

So ive passed every check apart from one where i used to work in a store ( which has now closed down)

I said on my CV i work there for 2 years .... but only worked there for 4-5months while i was in college (age 17-18)... i thought i could expand the date as they closed down and nobody would question it......

Now HSBC are asking for proof via bank statements. A bank statement from my first payday and a bank statement from my last......

I can provide the last bank statement......but can't provide the first as I lied.....

not sure what to do?....I worked at the store 5years ago! its pretty stupid they want proof!

I think i have 2 options

Option 1 - state I made a error on the CV..and contact my HR before HireRight do but it will most likely lead them to withdraw my offer...

Option 2 - say I changed banks through my employment and closed the account down so I cant get the statement....but I think banks might keep the statement for 6 years even after your closed the account down?

Could do with some advice? please

I think that is your only option.

If they found out you lied (never a good idea, particularly for industries where detailed checks are carried out) then they will certainly withdraw the offer. Even if you got the job it could come back to bite you later.

Tell the truth this time and have the evidence to back it up.

What did you do for the rest of that two year period?
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

    Thank you for the reply....

I rang up a random bank and asked how they kept statements from closed accounts... they said 6 years... which puts me back in the situation! but I can say ive asked the bank and they cant find it....

I only plan to stay here for 2-3months max! until I get a graduate job... have a few interviews lined up ..but they all start around March

How about you just stop lying? You got caught once and yet don't seem to be learning your lesson. Banks (and other employers) don't want to employ liars, because if you think it is acceptable to lie to get a job, what other lies will you consider acceptable.

Accept that you lost that job (and count your lucky stars if you don't) and move on looking for another job making sure you amend your CV to reflect your true experience and qualifications.

Yes it was a stupid error ... but like I said it was 5 years ago!

Ive had 2 more part time jobs since where every detail is 100% correct!

Didn't think they would even care about an employment from 5 years ago

I think your only option is to confirm that the start date isn't correct for that employment.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Do you think that would affect the offer? as it could be seen as human error?

It may do but if you don't own up to the the "mistake" and they find out it will almost certainly rule you out!

It wasn't a stupid error. It was a lie. You have already confirmed that it was a lie, so stop acting like it was an error. And why, exactly, is lying about something five years ago make it a better lie than if it was last week? If you didn't think they would care about five year old employment, why on earth did you lie about it in the first place?

I have to admit that perplexed as I am by why you lied about this, I am more concerned about your attitude to it. You are blaming the bank for their "stupid" security clearances, and describing it all as a silly mistake instead of what it actually is. And you are going out of your way to try to dig yourself out of it by telling more lies. It has maybe escaped your attention, but banks customers would like honest bank staff dealing with their accounts.
