splashback?-glass/acrylic/perspex/tiles

hi, just had kitchen fitted and been looking around showrooms etc, noticed that many now have glass/acrylic/Perspex splashbacks and upstands instead of tiles. they look really classy.
looking for advice/ideas if anyone has had any alternative to tiling, and any recommendations of where to obtain from.
I think they might be easy to fit , but I would be unsure as to how to cut round sockets etc.
Nice to save.

In my new kitchen I purchased an upstand which sits just below the sockets. I couldn't decide between tiling and the upstand, in the end I went for the upstand. Its cheaper and does look good. I bought mine with the kitchen for about an extra £40, its then glued on above the work top.
They should fit beneath the sockets.

As for splashback I went for a glass one that sits behind the hob. I shopped around for this and paid £30 from currys. I've just noticed its gone down to £24.99 now: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/cooking/splashbacks/sandstrom-s60spgw13-glass-splashback-21362887-pdt.html

We splashed out a little on our splashback (sorry !).

Got a beautiful piece of polished Blue Veined Welsh Slate from Inigo Jones Slateworks whilst on holiday in Snowdonia. Ordered it on our first day of the holiday, collected it on the last.

Cost about £120.00 but I'd taken some accurate measurements before leaving, so it was custom cut to size and fits millimetre perfect from worktop to extractor fan hood and cupboard to cupboard either side. A quick coat of linseed oil every couple of years to keep it sealed and looking gorgeous - and is perfectly happy resisting the Cillit Bang when getting the fat splatters off !
  • I had a clean freak friend buy a glass and stainless steel splashback as it looked so smart in the show room,

They now spend hours cleaning it as every mark/splash/fingerprint, is visible a mile off, especially with under wall unit lights.

    I went with tiles!

I think these acrylic sheets are often used in showrooms as they are easy to fit rather than having to tile the section in the showroom set-up.

This kitchen and my last I have upstands which are the same as the worktops. However you do need something behind the hob to prevent greasy splashes so a glass splashback here is a good idea. Agree that stainless steel is not a good idea as its impossible to keep clean!

thanks for all the replies, I do actually have upstands same as worktop, but was thinking of placing glass/acrylic sheets above these up to the wall units.
however , I am concerned they may look odd if they don't meet the worktop due to the upstands,
    has anyone had both?
I don't really want tiles, but will need something for above the sink and on the window sill, any suggestions please????????

I have seen some beautiful glass patterned splashbacks which I think I may get for above the hob
    Nice to save.

LOOKS GOOD IF FITTED PROPERLY . looks poor if designed or done wrong . Some needs to be toughened some can be cut onsite . Plug sockets are difficult to cut out of the middle of a piece and not a diy job . Get all the sizes right and you can fit them yourself . I have done a deep red behind my cooker to the top around the hood . Fitted a few in the past but no expert but good with a silicone gun and decent with a tape measure . depending where you are just google glass splash back kitchens and area . something will appear for advice at least . K Seal Glass by me spray the glass for a lot of north west companies .
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world
