Super silent washing machine

Ok so I'm looking to buy a new washing machine.
Next door neighbour works shifts so I need one with a low decibel spin but yet still at least 1400....not one that sounds like a jumbo jet.
Under £350 would be grand too....
Any ideas??? :o

It is not just the machine, the floor it is standing makes a big difference.

My LG direct drive is the quietest I've ever had. You could check those out.

Aye, some of the LG Direct Drive machines run at 72dB so the actual spinning doesn't make a lot of noise at all. Whirlpool sell a range ('Supreme Care') that runs even quieter at something like 66dB, although I haven't actually found any models for sale yet that describe this in their specs and I suspect they would be priced outside your budget.

I was needing a new washer earlier this year and noise was important to me. From a brief spot check it seemed to me that the average washing machine runs at somewhere in the high seventies (77 - 79) and the above article indicates this to be the case too. I don't know the exact details but the decibel scale is not linear so 50dB is not half of 100dB and 25dB is not half of 50dB and so forth. The above link indicates that each 6dB drop equates to roughly half the perceived noise level, although somebody else more knowledgeable may correct that.

As alluded to above, though, if your floors are suspended (i.e. there is a cavity below the floorboards) then quite a bit of the noise can be the machine shaking and the various fixtures around it rattling. Our new machine, while spinning comparatively quietly, still shakes the area around it so dishes on the drainer rattle together and the adjacent cupboard doors rattle (I'm hoping to fit some magnets to hold them closed more firmly). If you have solid concrete below your flooring, and provided you set the feet so it is rock steady, then your neighbours would barely hear your machine at all.

Incidentally, I eventually plumped for the LG FH4U2VCN2, which is well above your stated budget but had £150 off at the time.Other models I looked at were:

    LG
    F14U2TDNO (White, 72dB) - £430 to £500
    F14U2TCN8 (Black, 72dB) - £549
    F14U1TCN6 (Grey, 72dB) - £663
    F14A8TDA (White, 72dB) - £516
    F1489AD (White, 72dB) - £530
    FH4A8TDN2 (White, 73dB) - £469
    FH4U2VCN2 (White, 74dB) – £419

    Samsung
    AddWash WW70K5410UW (White, 74dB) £478
    WF80F5E5U4X Ecobubble (Graphite, 74dB) - £549
    WW80J6410CW. Also WW6000 (White, 74dB) - £479.

    Bosch
    WAT24420GB (White, 74dB) - £589
    WAT28460GB (White, 74dB) - £449

    Siemens
    WM14W590GB (White, 71dB) - £678

These are all fairly expensive but some had offers available at one retailer or another at the time I was checking (e.g. discounted price, cashback, money back on old washer and so forth). Try searching the model numbers on price comparison sites to see what comes up. There may well be other models but I was anxious about depth (I need to be able to open an adjacent cupboard door) so didn't add particularly deep ones.

Also try Googling quiet washing machines; a few of the pages that come up were helpful in my research.

The Samsung WF80F5E5U4X is only a few quid above your £350 at the moment and spins at 74dB. It's from a reputable retailer and appears to have good warranty support at present. The reviews seem positive on the whole.
  • +1 for the LG direct drive models , we've had the F1247TD5 for a few years and its been excellent and is very quiet indeed.

Their fridge/freezers with the linear compressors are excellent too.

Bosch WAT28370GB 9kg 1400 spin £389 in John Lewis (£375 coop with a voucher code?), or any of the Bosch with the newer EcoSilence Drive are superb.
We recently got a similar model and are amazed at how quiet it is, even the filling noise is restrained. Probably due to the self cleaning detergent drawer system.
European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.

We have a Meile (I see your budget so not advocating you buy one of these) - originally it was plonked on the kitchen floor, under a breakfast bar (2 feet from a wall) and used to shake the whole house and make a lot of noise on spin.

When we had the kitchen remodeled we moved it to a pantry area. Before installing it though I laid a piece of ply underneath where the machine would sit. I screwed the ply through the floorboards and into the joists. The machine now hardly moves and makes a lot lot less noise.

So its not just the machine that you need to consider, it needs to be installed well too.
  • This Bosch just posted on the Hot UK Deals web site appears to tick most of your boxes. 9KG load, 1400 spin, quiet (73dB) and less than £350. Might be worth seeking some reviews on it?
