hi guys. i've just passed my driving test. i was thinking of using my sister's old car, but it hasn't been used for quite a while and it hasn't got mot, tax or insurance. what do you guys recommend i do to get it up and running again?
i was thinking of taxing it and driving it to the garage for an mot but is that allowed? ie: car with no mot on the road.

First of all what sort of car it is? Age, mileage and condition of car, how long has it been off road for?
You need MOT and insurance before it can be tax. You are only allowed to drive it to an MOT test centre when you have booked it in advance with that test centre.0 -
You will have to get it insured before you drive it to a garage, if you get caught driving with no insurance you will 6 - 8 points and will lose your licence0

I'd say the first thing you should do is find out if it'll pass an MOT. No point in shelling out for the rest until you know that. You can drive to (and from) a pre-booked MOT appointment without MOT or tax, but you need insurance. Can you get someone who is covered to drive any vehicle to run it down to the garage for you?If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

You can't tax it without MOT and insurance.
So your first step is to get it MOTd. Mr bad above has the right idea, ask someone with fully comp to drive it to the MOT station, There are some insurers who no longer offer any car insurance for fully comp. And some who do but with the proviso that the car itself has it's own insurance aswell (which yours dosen't) - whoever drives it will need to check their policy.
MOT are not cheap these days, try to find one with a free retest. or one which is discounted.
Once your friend is willing to drive it (or you arrange your own insurance for it - don't forget you can cancel a new policy within 14days and get your money back). Then as long as you book an MOT appointment you are allowed to drive it to the MOT station without an MOT. However you are not allowed to drive it in a terrible condition - bald tyres, no brakes, no lights etc etc.0 -

I didn't know that I'll keep that in mind in the future.0 -

its not really that usefull since you still need to be insured with someone or youll get done, theres an electronic database now and cameras that check it so you cant just insure a car, tax it and get your cash back.
oh and my policy is tpft and it has any car cover, though bell are bloody good, costing me £61 for upgrade my cover from group 11 to group 19 when i past my test just under 2 years ago lol0 -

it's an old renault clio. i think the mot has expired since about 6 months ago. it's just lying there on the driveway.
so, based on the advice in the forum:
1) make appointment with garage people.
2) get insurance cover.
3) only then drive the old banger to the garage.
have i got everything?0 -

You MUST also insure it!
It is perfectly legal to drive a car to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for pre-boked repairs, so long as it is not dangerous.
(Ambiguous? I know!)0 -
